Commercial Description:
The rich amber color and caramel flavor of this beer are derived from the generous amount of caramel malt in our recipe, with just a dash of roasted unmalted barley for a subtle toasted flavor in the background. The sweetness, body, and mouth feel tell you that this is an all-malt beer. The finish has a balanced edge of Willamen and Casade hoppiness which cuts through the malty character, leaving a clean palate which beckons for more. Note: the terminology of "stein" refers to the appropriate drinking vessel and not to a type of beer made with hot rocks.

(12 oz bottle: Obtained in trade with footbalm, thanks Eric!) Half an inch of light-tan head covers the hazy, ruddy amber body. At first, the mildly aromatic nose is sweet, caramely, and lightly malty, with a balancing touch of hops, but as more headspace opens up, the beer opens up as well and becomes more malty and caramely. But this is a much more flavorful beer than the initial aroma lets on. It starts sweet and very caramely, and then is somewhat balanced by a moderate bitterness. But that bitterness eventually turns a bit harsh late in the finish, resulting in a slightly acerbic aftertaste. This was bottled the end of April, 2005, so this is five months old and should have had enough time for that harshness to fully mellow out. Medium bodied. The sweetness sits on the palate, and you’d think the bitterness would help to clean that out a bit, but it doesn’t. This is okay, but there’s just something about the way this beer finishes that puts a damper on what is otherwise a very nice beer.

bottle-thanks to secret santa for this one. pours a clear copper hue with a fizzy off-white head. aroma of caramel malt, spicy hops (Well well, when i was smelling this beer, i told myself "hey, i smell some american hops here. I guess i was right with the cascades), german yeast quallities and light funk. good malt base here. flavors are caramel malts, big spicy german hops with a light undertone of those cascades. body is medium and full for this style. finish is fairly bitter with all those spicy hops. some light malt notes (toasted) come out as well. This is a very good vienna, but not as good as the Great Lakes version i must say. This would make a great session beer.

Straight from my birthday keg. Wow -- when they say "a generous amount of caramel malt" they aren’t kidding. Aroma is heavy caramel malt. Rich, mouth-coating malty flavor goodness. Very smooth and full, with hops lingering at the end, giving a slightly metallic finish along with tickling, light carbonation. This beer tastes as it looks -- full, rich, and caramelly in a beautiful amber liquid.

Deep red with a nice off white long lasting head. Aroma of malt and caramel. Strong roasted malt and caramel taste with some hoppy bitterness at the finish. Full bodied with a nice heavy mouth feel. One of my favorites.
