Commercial Description:
The rich amber color and caramel flavor of this beer are derived from the generous amount of caramel malt in our recipe, with just a dash of roasted unmalted barley for a subtle toasted flavor in the background. The sweetness, body, and mouth feel tell you that this is an all-malt beer. The finish has a balanced edge of Willamen and Casade hoppiness which cuts through the malty character, leaving a clean palate which beckons for more. Note: the terminology of "stein" refers to the appropriate drinking vessel and not to a type of beer made with hot rocks.

pours a thickly chill-hazed orange-tinted red, with a fairly thin off-white head that collapses fairly quickly but sticks around as a collar, and laces a bit. sweet malty nose has caramel notes and a bit of fruit. nice enough, but not very "lager-y". flavor starts somewhat sweet and juicy, then finishes with a nice rush of spicy hoppiness. very round. mellow beer - seems to be dominated by a caramel maltiness. good enough, but nothing terribly special. as it warms, some toffee notes become more dominant.

Bottle - Pours amber with a small cream-colored head. Smells of popcorn and sweet, sticky malt, though you really have to get your nose in the glass to get it. Tastes like rice with a bit of sweet malt and an off bitter finish. It doesn’t seem very well-balanced, and is way too sweet and syrupy in the mouth. Not feeling this one.

True to form I drank this from a stein my son bought me. Pours a dark amber with a creamy off-white head. Nose is not impressive. Has a thick consistency on the tongue. Toasted nuts quickly pleasure the palate.Little malt, only a brief glimpse of hops. This brew probably would suck if it were not for the nuttiness of it. Very nice. I can feel it from my tastebuds to my inner nostrils.

Pours a bit lighter than I thought it would, and the malty aroma signals the taste to come. Caramel and toffee malt tastes dominate, with some whitebread toast flavor peaking near the finish. Immeadiately after this toast flavor, the hops start to shine with a mellow bitterness that nicely rounds off the beer. Body is wet and light, but this seems to work well for the taste.

Light toasty, slightly grassy scent. Taste is light but flavorful. Toasty malts with a very nice yet faint hop flavor. Very refreshing and tasty, easy to drink.

had a few of these while camping in the rain with some friends in WI. not the best note-taking environment, but i managed to write

"fair amber ale with interesting background flavor = 2.5"

i see now that it was unmalted barley hiding out back there, and yes, i was dissapointed that it was not "hot rocks" steinbier. that would have made the whole camping in the rain thing much more tolerable.

anyway, i had bought all the New Glarus beers i could find on my way up there and was anxious to move on to those. can you blame me?

Pours a dark riddish-orange hue. Decent head and adequate lacing. Aroma is of caramel malt with some honey mixed in for good measure. Nice balancing of hoppiness on the palate. Clean aftertaste leaving just enough sweetness on the finish. Crisp as a good lager should be. Would make a good breakfast beer. One of their better beers, but not anything very interesting. Ordinary, but not bad.

From 8-pack bottled 3rd week of August. Chestnut color, slightly hazy. Caramel flavor, maybe slightly woody. Light bitterness. Smooth.
