Aroma: bitter and roasty, coffee hints, chocolate whispers, whiff of nuts. Nice enough.
Taste: a bit too thin in body for a stout that I’d favor, finish dies right off the palate. As for flavor, the roasty, coffee-ish taste is there, in a minor fashion, but doesn’t play much on the tongue...slight bitter bite. Body really needs to be bigger, and there’s just not much going on.
If they want an entry-level Guinness-substitute, without rocking anyone’s boat, this is a fine accomplishment...but it brings me little joy.
I can drink it down just fine, but will not return to it after this 6 pack is over and done. Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Mar 20, 2005 Pours an almost jet black, small brown head. Aroma is full of caramel, chocolate and coffee, a little lactose and vanilla. Flavor is light, roasted coffee, "metallic" twang, almost sour finish. Not really my style, or beer. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 1/5 | 11/20 | Mar 7, 2005 Thick pillowy head and opaque stout color. Unique peaty, smoky aroma hinting vaguely of reefer. Aroma is definitely the "high point" of the Snake Chaser, also containing some plum and root-beer-barrel elements. Flavor is stifled in the mouth by an unripe peach sourness leading to a pencil-lead-stout experience overall - the main downside to this beer. In any case there is little of the flavor complexity of a great European stout, and the body of this beer is quite watery and poorly carbonated. Finish isn’t bad, more like a smoked porter with unsweetened baker’s chocolate ... and a little of that reefer — of course we all KNOW that’s not real ૌછ ! In all fairness to the style I have this slated to try a warm bottle - which may alter this rating. Murphy (1759), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Mar 4, 2005 Nice head, settles thin. Opaque. Roasted, sour aroma. Maybe soy. Taste is very roasty, but has an underlying sour funk. Body was quite thin. Finish is strange, off. ChrisPants (317), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 1, 2005 Benevolent stouty pour with forgiving beige head. Mouthfeel was thin for the style but the flavor still managed to come throug--albeit in a session-y manner. Tasty snack for less than 6 for a 6-pack. kms399 (267), plymouth, Minnesota, USA
