Commercial Description:
We are proud offer one of the few surviving examples of this traditional English style sweet stout. A bold, dark ale bursting with roasted barley dryness and mellowed by hints of chocolate and coffee.

Pours black with a robust tan head and great lacing, aroma of roasted malts, flavor is a balance of black and roasted malts with a sweetness in the finish balanced nicely with some hop bitterness. Overall, a solid example of a sweet stout.

On tap @ Lancaster Brewing Harrisburg. Dark brown with mahogany edges, tan head with lacing. Full aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Sweet with a roasty bitterness. Medium to full body with mild carbonation and a long roasty coffee finish. Very nice.

On tap at SPTR poured into a pint glass. Nice thick head on this sucker; can’t remember if there was lacing. Smell is of mild coffee and chocolate; some alcohol, but not much. Taste is of milk chocolate. By that I mean that it’s a sweet (for a stout) taste with chocolate malt undertones. Coffee was also present. Very smooth beer but not creamy due to the fact that it was well carbonated and not quite thick enought to be considered creamy. Overall a good beer. I had this once a long time ago in bottles and it wasn’t nearly as good. I hope that my bottle experience was just a bad batch. Not one of the best stouts out there but, especially if you like sweet stouts, worth a drink.

Black pour with nice head. Aroma of milkiness and some malt. Flavor follows accordingly. Smooth. Pretty good beer.

Enjoyed from a 12oz bottle in a pub glass. The beer pours a black color, with a light tan head. Mild to moderate carbonation. The aroma brings sweeter than expected notes. A touch of caramel, some other difficult-to-pinpoint sweetness, and some roasted notes come through. The palate is far less acrid and coffee-like in character than most stouts, perhaps benefiting from the lactose addition. The latter isn’t as prevelant as I would have expected, but does add a nice smooth sweetness. Hops don’t really make any kind of appearance in terms of bitterness nor character. The finish is moderate and enjoyable. Overall, a nicely done sweet stout.

Pours nearly black with a dark head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is huge roasted malt, some milk chocolate, mostly sweet with some lactic sourness. Finish is dry with a lingering roasted malt.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Gilly’s, 9/24/09

Aroma: Mostly sweet roasted malts with mild coffee & chocolate
Appearance: Dark brown color, fizzy brown head that dissipates quickly
Flavor: Roasted malty flavor, but just a touch thin & one dimensional
Palate: Like the flavor the mouthfeel is a touch thin, light-medium bodied
Overall Impression: I’ve had this one a few times before, but this is my first time rating it. It is a pretty decent beer, but unfortunately it just isn’t powerful or complex enough to be more then decent. Not a bad beer, just not exciting enough for me to go much higher then this on the score. A drinkable, but hardly memorable stout.
