Mostly sweet malt in the nose, flavor is sweet & sour with the slightest notion of citrus at the right temprature finish with coffee and chocolate and a lingering creamy finish. Not as sweet/creamy as I expected, a nice surprise. Good carbonation makes it fairly drinkable. TURDFERGUSON (1603), Carrboro, North Carolina, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Bottle brought back from Lancaster from my friend John. Thanks! Pours a deep brown with a small tan head and good lace. Aroma is roasty, with a bit of soy sauce, and lactic acid. Flavor is much better, more roast, a bit of lactose, and a mild chocolate and coffee character. A fine beer, but not my favorite style of stout. mwelsh13 (483), Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 29, 2007 Deep brown/black opaque pour with nice thick tan head. Nice roasty aroma with light hops notes. Great mouthfeel with lactose sweetness. Bit of chocolate in the taste as well with a little bitterness and burnt flavors. Always a good, easy drinking stout. dancatts (91), Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 17, 2007 One of the easiest stouts I’ve had to drink. Had the stout look and aroma, but was smoothed out with a creamy aftertaste that really made this one. A real treat for anyone who enjoys stouts. Perm (151), Tryon, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Dec 7, 2007 This was a nice surprise from a brewery I knew nothing about! Bottle purchased 11/07 in Winchester, VA, on the recommendation of a friend.
Appearance (why does aroma come before appearance in the list? Seems backward to me): Black, black, black. Not quite like bad Slavic sludge but nevertheless an opaque brew. A tan-brown (cashew-colored) head that thins as it goes.
Aroma: begins with a sharp whiff of lactic acid before revealing a few more notes. I can’t help but think of ice cream. There are also some pleasant floral hop tones, and a generous offering of hot cereal (cream of wheat?).
Flavor: The nose gives one the impression of conservativism and reserve (good English virtues) but once the stout hits the tongue it opens its petals to reveal a rich smorgasbord of delights. The first sensation is a pleasant chicory (not too strong), followed by pumpernickel toast, allspice, toasted sesame, and finally chocolate malt ice cream.
Palate: It’s sharp, and there’s definitely some lingering here, although not entirely unpleasant.
Overall. I can’t get over how much richer the taste is than the nose. It’s quite good, and quite balanced -- a noble brew for a cold evening. I had it (went out on a limb here) along with some homemade hot & sour soup, and it worked! I’d also pour myself a glass of this without hesitation to accompany nut-filled warm brownies.

Dark, but not too thick. Very smooth and creamy. Taste is mostly coffee... a little chocolate ? Goes down WAY too fast and easy. blindeyedbetty (151), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Oct 26, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Poured opaque black with little head. Sweet malty aroma - almost molasses-like with hint of coffee that gets stronger as it breathes. Body is much thinner than I expected. Flavor of strong coffee and extremely bitter finish with dry, roasted aftertaste. To me, this tastes almost like really bad, really old coffee made into beer. Very unpleasant finish and aftertaste. The best thing about this beer for me was the aroma, which belies the thin body that follows. RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA
