Aroma is an interesting combination of nuts and floral hops. Very sweet tasting IPA that is balanced very well with the bitter hops and has a nice dry finish. | 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 12, 2009 Deep amber-tan beer. Aroma is kind of strange. Earthy and a resiny with a very chewy hop presence. Loads and loads of resiny astringent hops on the back with a touch of light herbal character. There is a bit of dark maltiness, but not all that much. I can’t really say I’m a fan of this one. tjthresh (1781), Greenfield, Indiana, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 30, 2009 Pours black, but its deep brown with garnet highlights when held to light. The nose is really nice with citrus/pine hops, but its really just one note. There’s maybe a touch of roasted character. This thing is hoppy as hell, but I wish it had a bit of roasted note. There’s a bit of an herbal/earthy note. Medium body with pricky carbonation. This is a tasty enough beer, but if "black ipa" ever becomes a recognized style, this may not make the cut as one of the best.

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Apr 26, 2009 Dark brown with a thin off white head. Aroma is lightly roasty, light mild hoppiness, light alcohol. Taste is lightly roasty, subdued hops. Pretty bland for a black IPA. IrishBoy (2725), Bakersfield, California, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Apr 25, 2009 Bomber from John’s Marketplace. Nose of flowery and citrusy hops and some malty sweetness. Clear brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is mildly bitter with somelightly sweet caramel. Finish is a hint of bitter with some licorice. More like a slightly hoppy amber than an IPA! willblake (2191), Belcamp, Maryland, USA
| 2.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Apr 22, 2009 20090422 Bomber from Jonathan Ron in Brielle. Murky brown color with small but lasting beige head that sheets lace. Aroma is oddly sweet with a mess of blueberry, canned fruit salad, old OJ, light coffee malts, cookie dough, and some minty spruce notes. Very thin bodied, ashy. Flavor is charcoal, dust, old bread, burnt malts, lots of herby spruce and pith. Midway across the palate a nice resinous bitterness kicks in, and finishes with a bit of grapefruit pithiness. Eff is mostly even and light. Hop burps sooth some evil afterthoughts of an otherwise disappointing beer. notalush (2691), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Apr 18, 2009 Thanks to bitbucket for this - Pours a hazy dark amber - soapy lace - nose f tropical fruits (pineapple and mango), which really confuses the senses, because your brain does not expect those smells to come from a dark beer - the flavor is very dry and strongly bitter - a bit of roast underneath, but the bitterness is so strong that the other characteristics are kind of squashed - if I didn’t love hops so much, I would like this a lot less. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Apr 17, 2009 Draft at Craft. Pours ruby, not black, with 1-finger of off-white head. Nose is heavy piney hops, dark malt, brown sugar, tropical fruit. Tastes malty, with rich resiny hops. earthy, a bit of pineapple, but the hops overtake the malt late. Solid.
