A very smooth, full bodied IPA, pours dark amber with a thick head. Best Laughing Dog beer I’ve had. Although I would love to try Dogfather. poisoneddwarf (222), Rathdrum, Idaho, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 1, 2009 22 oz bottle. Very piney aroma, citrus too. Pours deep dark brown with a thick head, beautiful looking bubbles floating to the top, excellent lacing. Flavor is of roasted black coffee (in an IPA? weird, but good), piney hops, smoke. Medium bodied. Nice afterrtaste. Refreshing take on this classic style. BREWMUSKCLES (1088), New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 31, 2009 this has a grape hop profile. i even get a taste of raspberry jam. there is a nice malt characer that seems to waft in and out as this 22 oz bomber took me some thirty or more minutes to finish working on the ride. a nice beer for halloween as it is a tricky number. dark, fruity and pleasant its a pretty darn good brew lightish body tingly sassafrass and soda pop character in the finish. smcolw (373), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Oct 31, 2009 I love this concept. I haven’t tried this beer, but I envision some high-hopped beer with lots of chocolate/black patent malts. Let’s see:
First impression, appearance: Huge, light beige head. True to title, the liquor is dark brown (not black, though). It appears clear because the light shines through without any opaqueness. Excellent lace and rocky head look as it recedes. Lots of foamy lace on the glass.
Good darker malt aroma--true to my prediction. Nice toastiness without any burnt smells. So, I’m leaning toward darker crystal malts here. Graham crackers and biscuits.
Imagine a cross between a good porter and an IPA. I love the originality! This could be a completely new style and it combines the interests of the hop-heads and the stout lovers. (I think it leans closer to the HH’s). This is very good and different. The body is thinner than I would like, but that’s a minor complaint.
Is it a dark IPA or an over-hopped porter? Either way, you will experience something outside the comfort zone. AND it is still very good. If you have an open mind, seek this out and try something totally different from the usual fair. Hoptagon (145), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 30, 2009 22oz. Bottle. Root beer colored ale with a nicely lacing frothy collar of foam. Aroma is earthy, with a strong grassy scent, not exactly what I was hoping for. Flavor is a bit more complex, but tastes unbalanced. Grassy flavored hops overpower the mix. If you can get past the vegetal qualities there are some subdued but pleasant notes of chocolate and roasted malt. The mouthfeel of the beer is slightly thin with a strong level of carbonation. Ends with a kick of roast and a sharp, dry bitterness. I applaud the attempt, but both the Southern Tier Iniquity and Stone Sublimely Self Righteous are a substantial step up. nickd717 (1392), Palo Alto, California, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 30, 2009 Bomber via trade as an extra from JohnGalt1 - thanks, Toby! Pours clear dark brown with a creamy beige head that lasts a hell of a long time. Leaves good lacing. Aroma is perfumy floral hops, citrus hops, herbal notes, and a little roast. Flavor is caramel, chocolate, and roasted malt along with floral and citrusy/grapefruit hops. Medium-bodied with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel with lingering hop bitterness. Great black IPA overall. These Laughing Dog guys are solid. HomeBrewHawk (282), De Soto, Kansas, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 29, 2009 22 oz. bottle served in a Duvel Tulip. Opened with a big pop. Lots of carbonation. Poured a deep brown with a huge head of light tan foam. Citrusy hop aroma. More citrus and piney hops in the flavor. Plenty of hop bitterness. Some chocolate malt. Nice lacing on the glass. Medium bodied, the carbonation didn’t really take anything away from the beer. Finished with malt dryness along with drying hops. Nice Black IPA, works for me. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 29, 2009 Brewed in the USA... Pours a deep dark brown color with some ruby highlights and a godzilla size foamy off white head and nice lacing. Aroma of mega hops, pine, malts and some citrus notes. Taste of lingering hops, burnt roasted malts, wood and a hint of dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium in body and a wonderful super dry bitter finish. Wow, this really was a very enjoyable black IPA :)
