(Bottle) Purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle on October 20, 2007. I’d never heard of this brewery before Oakes mentioned it during the visit to Bottleworks but the scores on RB and positive remarks has me hoping we’ll see more of Laughing Dog in the future. This beer had a solid cocoa base with a roasted-cold-coffee-sitting-on-the-element-for-too Very thick and malty, this should be the pride of Idaho. Yummy!

Pours dark brown, ends up black in the glass. Light brown thick head. Rich chocolate nose with stinging roast more akin to a rich foreign stout like Angkor or Malaysian FES than to a sweet stout. Stingy rich roast character, yet it is fairly low in hop bitterness. Finishes with a dark chocolate character and a hint of almonds.

Dark brown/mahogany pour with a thin tan head that rapidly dissappears. The aroma is of candy caramels, light roast, vanilla, coffee, dark fruit and marshmallow creme. Alcohol is indetectable. The flavor is very pleasant and easygoing. Notes of light, sweet malt are just a hair over the threshold of adequacy. Hops provide ample bitterness that take a back seat to fine malt and mellow fruit. Sweetness is mild, astringency very mild and bitterness low to mild. The finish is chocolatey, lightly bitter from lingering hops, lightly roasty and soft, fading quickly. The mouthfeel is softly carbonated, medium bodied and very creamy and smooth, but not substantial in feel at any point. Very nice.

Bottle shared by boboski: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a thin, spotty-lacing tan head. Aroma of lightly sweet dark caramel and chocolate malts. Body starts with some dark caramel and a touch of raisins and light tartness toward a thinner, bittersweet dark chocolate finish. A decent stout, but could use a little more sweetness.

Bottle via trade with Jake65. Aroma of sweet roasted malt, vanilla and charred marshmallow. Some sweet candy bar that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Pours black with a thin, fizzy brown head. Flavor was fairly light and mildly sweet. Lightly roasted malt with a faint lingering bitterness. Some milk chocolate. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Thanks Jake!

From a 12-oz. bottle--Poured a highly carbonated deep black-brown color with a mammoth white-beige fizzy head. Nose of cherries and fruity chocolates. Flavor reflected a hoppy bite and a sweet, malty spine. Very enjoyable, but perhaps a little over carbonated.

Bottle courtesy of Wetherel. Pours a dark, dark brown with a tall, bubbly tan head. The head is very pervasive and once it diminishes to about a half inch, stays afloat for the duration of the drink. The nose has metallic notes and a far off sourness. I get tiny nips of hops and amusement park cappuccino. The flavor is much cleaner with virtually no hints of the weird metallic stuff going on in the aroma. There is a very pleasing balance of milk chocolate and gentle roasted notes. The finish hints at almonds and more chocolate. My biggest complaint is the palate is waterier than I would like from this style. Otherwise, this is a solid drink.
