Commercial Description:
Rich Coffee and chocolate flavors dominate this opaque working class Ale. Stout’s extreme popularity among the British factory workers of the 1800’s may qualify it as the fuel for the Industrial Revolution. "By the time you get it, you’re too far out."

A deep black with some brown running through in the light. The aroma is of roasted. The flavor is nicely roasted and some smokiness. A good medium body and a dry finish.

On tap at brewery: Black/Dark brown with virtually no head, very faint aroma of chocolate, coffee, and caramel. Mouth feel was very thin and watery for a stout, flavor profile was very weak with too much carbonation masking the little complexity that did exist. Not a terrible stout, but no where near "traditional", although the NW coast isn’t known for its stouts. Needs a much thicker body with bolder flavor profile.

Enjoyed at Laurelwood’s PDX outlet. It arrived almost headless and strangely also with precious little aroma. However, the glass was inviting and dark to look at and the taste was the reward. Nice dark chocolate, burnt coffee, and some malts all combined for an enjoyable flavour, which might’ve been further enhanced had the beer not been served at what I think was too cold a temperature.

On draft at the 51st Street Brewpub this poured a dark brown with a small tan head and light lacing. Nose of chocolate and coffee with good roasted malt qualities. Mouthfeel rich and clean, and flavor shows lots of that chocolate and coffee, which when combined with the slightly bitter finish made this a solid offering.

draft at the NW location. more reminiscent of a lighter imp stout than a sweet stout. full bodied and flavorful.

tap. sampler from Laurelwood Public House. I was well into a day of drinking while exploring portland and all I have written down for this one is: tingly mettallic and thin... but I gave it a 7 (or 3.5 by ratebeer scale). so I won’t screw up the average by putting this in, but would need to try again for a proper rate. portland is a dangerous place for a beer junkie.
