LadySusan (365), Ste-Therese, Quebec, Canada Nov 22, 2007 On tap at Bieres et Saveurs in Chambly. The color is a dark amber with a thick beige head. The taste to me was sweet but grainy and also smoky . It also had a very bitter not pleasant aftertaste. This one was not for me. red éric (1382), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 2, 2007 Sampled at Festival Bières et Saveurs, cloudy amber hue, with a beige head, toasted malt, with an earthy smoky malt note, with a hints of toffee and caramel, with a mild smoked bacon aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate, with a yeasty, toasty, earthy smoky malt character, with a subtle winey fruity note, leading towards an ashy, smoky, fruity finish. Lubiere (3231), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Sep 16, 2007 A dark reddish brown ale with a thin light moka head. A light caramel aroma, not smoked at all. In mout, a smokey malt with nutty notes. Light bodied. On tap at Festival Bières et Saveurs, Chambly, August 30, 2007. (Rating #1219) MartinT (4316), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 5, 2007 My Bottom Line:
While the announced beechwood smoke of this Rauchbier is genuine and prevalent from nose to aftertaste, there could be more derivative sweetness and less finishing tartness to truly obtain a harmonious pint.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the murky reddish brown.
-The smoky nose is somewhat dirty.
-Carbonation is effervescent and overrides the few base malt flavors.
-A citric tartness soon appears, just like the realization that this has to be an ale.
