Objectively speaking: Very weird beast whose red rice flavour is relatively well extracted, but the result feels extremely husky.
I like: It is a nice concept. Nice bright colour. The Japanese version from Kiuchi can be excellent when in shape. Good focus, the malt is neither too heavy nor too light to allow the red rice to shine through. Soft and oily palate despite the active and lasting carbonation.
I dislike: Extreme huskiness. This does not feel particularly fresh, like spent grain, not quite astringent, but teeth-coating and lasting in its spiciness. Not very refreshing. Just an originality ultimately, I would not really want to try it again, but am glad I tried it.

In short: An unusual dry, dusty and floury beer. Rough but intriguing.
How: Tap at brewpub, batch freshly put on tap
The look: Almost clear redish-golden body topped by a white ring of foam
In long: Grainy cereals and dry cake-ish maltiness. Some fruity notes of dry citrus skin. But the beer’s personality is its unusual rough mouth drying characteristic. A floury and dusty sensation is what stroke me about it. Not great but certainly intriguing Japanese-inspired beer, although I’m sure the Japanese could make it for half the price, twice as fast an in would pack the same power in a glass half the size.

(Rating #1619)
