Leavenworth Hodgsons India Pale Ale

Cask. Another multiple tasting at the Calgary beer fest. Heavily hopped and unsettled made for a dirty orange drink. Some pours looked like butterscotch. A big hit with those looking for a flavourful beer. Dry hop flavour with just enough malt sweetness to keep moving. More than just hops.

Light sticky head, quickly dissipating with lots of lacing. Beige amber color, lightly hazy, low carbonation. The aroma is rather hoppy with a distinct PNW feel, a bit of caramel sweetness but rather dry. The flavor is hoppy, a bit too dry and unbalanced. Paired well with some spicy happy-hour tacos. Finishes more rounded but still one-dimensional overall. The hops are more citrusy than floral or herbal. Decent average PNW IPA.

Had on tap at the Fishbowl Pub. Overall, an excellent IPA. Cloudy, murky nectar-like appearance. Has the patented cascade hopped west coast grapfruit twang. The aroma is citrusy with some floral notes. Very good crisp mouthfeel. Little bit of trivia - did you know that Hodgson was the inventor of the IPA (at least that is what the bartender at the Fishbowl Pub told me).

For a northwest IPA the hops are not that intense but if you’re not a hop fan this one may not be for you. A good introductionion into the ultra hoppy northwestern IPS. Light to medium bodied, nice but mellow citrus aroma. My glass was very clear, light amber, lightly carbonated with a small persistent head. Clean finish

A very citrusy addition to the increasingly large mountain of Northwest IPAs. Leavenworth doesn't really have anything spectacular (unlike their new corporate owner) but still manages to put out some pretty decent beers. This IPA may in fact be their best beer: cloudy and a very unfiltered body with minimal head, smelling strongly of lemons. The flavor isn't too much different, a bit lemon zesty (like the cleanser) but not unappetizing. Pretty unique considering the monumental number of IPAs in the area.

Before they closed the brewery in Leavenworth this was one of my staples when visiting there. Good aroma, finishes dry with a good lingering smack of hops. A good IPA in this hopheads book...

Aroma is lightly but pleasantly hoppy, with yeasty, tangy notes...Color is a light, hazy copper with a moderate, feathery head and patchy lace---quite attractive...Flavor features an intense wave of hops at first sip, with an current of fruity bittersweetness riding beneath...Carbonation is moderate and adds to the considerable bite...Finish is grapefruity and rind-dry...Lingering hop bitters cling to the back of mouth and throat and won’t let go! This ale’s body feels lighter than it actually is due to its unabashedly hop-heavy character, but what it may lack in balance it compensates for substantially with the intensity of its flavors...This IPA is not for the meek...Hop-haters need not apply...
