2007 bottling. Dark brown with a rocky tan head that lingers. Big musty cellar, spicy sweet candi sugar aroma. Light/medium body with a chalky drying mouthfeel. Good dusty brown ale flavors with dry malts and cookie spices. Has a lightly sweet taste to finish. This beer ages well ( 3 - 5 years )

Very dark brown body with a medium creamy tan head. Cork popped as opening and nearly hit me on the way to the ceiling. Huge molassas and anise aroma, with some dry malts. More molassas and lighter anise in the flavor with some light caramel and faint bitterness in the finish. Medium full body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle split with maniac. When he uncaged it, the cork near took his eye out! Pours black with fluffy tan head. Molasas in the nose and LOTS of anise flavor. Very velvety and delicious.

this brew just gave me a scare, the stopper hit the roof after i unwired it. other than that it’s a nice belgian, sweet malt aroma that is spicy and caramelly accompanies the dark copper hued appearance. the flavor is fruity and chocolatey with lingering sweet finish.

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a large lasting tan head. Aromas of toffee, spice, orange peel and a hint of wood. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of toffee, spice, ligfht orange and a hint of licorice with a smooth bittrersweet finish.

750ml purchased at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquor. Pours a dark brown with a big head of brownish bubbles. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, pit fruit and anise. Taste is very sweet, a little syrupy, just barley thinned by the dry orange peel and anise. Alcohol could also be higher to cut it (8% is not really that strong for this style). Not one of my favorite Belgiums. Very average, and too sweet.

This beer can easily be considered a cheaper substitution for more expensive alternatives such as the chimay series. Although it is not quite as good as the aforementioned chimay, it is quite good. Get it and try it out for yourself.
