Beautiful head and lace. Aroma brings you yeast, caramel, fruit (cherries) and some hops too. A bit of alcohol warmth in the taste. Sweet but dry, a slightly bitter almond finish. Not quite as complex, thick or smooth as the élite belgians strong ales, but still a balanced and enjoyable brew. In Italy, this one could make the "Top 10 easily accessible beers". lovibond (112), New York, USA Apr 29, 2004 Crap. A very idosyncratic element in both flavor and aroma which I can’t pin down, but belongs in neither. Not bottle conditioned. Sugary sweet taste. The Norbertine monks of Dinant may have great piety, but the mass-produced beer which bears their name has no soul. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Apr 19, 2004 Ruby brown hue with a thin off-white head, well-laced though. Aroma is very very yeasty, but of very restrained depth, sadly so. There's some kind of fruitiness in there that is hard to put words on, but I'd throw oranges and peaches. Mostly dry yeast still and it continues in mouth where it gets slightly more interesting but no big winner. The palate is peppery, fruity, dry with light notes of dust, perhaps a bit too old. Body is almost flat, thin-medium and appears unappropriate. AlphaOne (142), Australia Apr 2, 2004 very nice reddish amber, with a great fluffy head. aroma is of fruity, cherry and very belgian yeastiness slightly acidic. very complex, nice spicy/peppery alcohol, fruity yeast, a little cherry, slight woody profile. drying, lingering bitterness
nice diabel (1366), Aarschot, Belgium Mar 18, 2004 Clear, brown-reddish body. Brownish head, creamy, mostly diminishing and good lacing. Hoppy, malty (chocolate) aroma. Sweet initial falvour, lightly sweet, lightly bitter finish. ThomasE (5179), Copenhagen, Denmark Mar 16, 2004 Amber colour with fine head. Aroma is sweet, fruity and spicy. Flavor is malty with bitter finish, cant quite hide the alcohol content. Muggus (193), Sydney, Australia Mar 4, 2004 First Leffe i've ever tried, definately not my last. Quite a strong aroma. Sourish nose with a bit of spice and sweet fruitiness is what I get. Pours clean dark redish amber with tan lacing. A carmally malt beginning a fair bit of alcohol gets through quite quickly. A number of sour fruity notes along with way, maybe apple, and a fair bit of spice towards the end. Creamy kind of mouthful that is a bit let down by the quite apparent alcohol. Very nicely flavoured beer, maybe lacking enough to mask the alcohol as so many other Belgian strongs do so well.
