Aroma is very very yeasty, but of very restrained depth, sadly so. There's some kind of fruitiness in there that is hard to put words on, but I'd throw oranges and peaches. Mostly dry yeast still and it continues in mouth where it gets slightly more interesting but no big winner. The palate is peppery, fruity, dry with light notes of dust, perhaps a bit too old. Body is almost flat, thin-medium and appears unappropriate. AlphaOne (142), Australia

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 4, 2004 First Leffe i've ever tried, definately not my last. Quite a strong aroma. Sourish nose with a bit of spice and sweet fruitiness is what I get. Pours clean dark redish amber with tan lacing. A carmally malt beginning a fair bit of alcohol gets through quite quickly. A number of sour fruity notes along with way, maybe apple, and a fair bit of spice towards the end. Creamy kind of mouthful that is a bit let down by the quite apparent alcohol. Very nicely flavoured beer, maybe lacking enough to mask the alcohol as so many other Belgian strongs do so well. SimonLarsen (210), Sydney, Australia

This is the big brother, stronger aroma spicy with a hint of green banana. Bitter finish which hides the alcohol a lot but isn't as subtle as could be hoped for. It's nice and it's cheap for the style here. I just wish that some of the sweet malt beginning could have been carried to the end. I'd drink a lot more of these then. | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 15, 2004 Some malt and sourness in the nose. Medium, but fast disappearing head. Beautiful amber colured body. Malty taste first, but ends in a rather bitter finish. Quite carbonated, but not that nice warm feel you get from other belgian ales. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 9, 2004 A nice dark amber color, clear for a Belgian. Small head but good lacing. Has that fruit filled pastry scent common with Belgians. Like an apple cinnamon danish with almond slices sprinkled over it. A warming spicyness on the lips, like biting a slice of fresh ginger. Sweet but not cloying. All said, it's a solid brew.
