Commercial Description:
Asylum is in the style of a Belgian Tripel. It has a beautiful golden color. Its relatively light body is deceiving for a beer of its character. It has a sweet and spicy, complex fruity aroma and flavor derived from our distinct Belgian yeast strain. Asylum finishes with a subtle, warming character to help you relax on any night. Asylum is an exceptionally smooth Belgian-style brew. Drinking great beer brings the world together. “Vrede op aarde” (Peace on earth).

Bottle 22fl.oz.
Clear light to medium amber orange color with a average, frothy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, fruity, orange, moderate to heavy yeasty, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration, peppery. Body is medium, texture is oily - syrupy, carbonation is soft, finish feel is moderate alcoholic. [20090821]

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark gold body with a one finger foamy white head. The nose is perfume-like and spicy with a bit of acetone and pale malt. Minimal yeast noticeable. Very sweet and heavy pale malt flavor with a little too much alcohol. This is quite a boring Triple. Too heavy, thick, and cloying with light fizzy carbonation. No yeast character at all to this beer. I want a softer, more yeasty Triple. This just didn’t do it for me.

Bottle from COOP in Davis. This Tripel was rather sweet, but I tend to like that. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t quite the normal Belgian, but it’s a refreshing California Belgian. Good drinkable beer on a warm day.

Dilute iced tea color, small amounts of coarse head. Aroma of lilies, light cigarette ash, light doughiness, cloviness. Very sweet, doughy flavor, lots of instant tea notes. Light bitterness doesn’t do nearly enough to offset the extreme sweetness. Boring and overbearingly sweet.

Pours a luminous golden color, translucent, with modest white head. Nose reminds me of a white wine with some light fruits, perhaps honey, but also alcohol & phenols. A lot of sweetness is present on the palate, again with fruit, and quite a bit of alcohol warmth on the finish. Not a great example of a tripel.

Bottle, 65cl, shared by Papsoe. It’s a clear, golden beer, completely flat and without head. There’s alcohol, some spicyness, phenols and tropical fruits in the aroma. The flavor is a bit too much on the alcohol and phenolic side, with a nice addition of tropical fruits and some spices. Full-bodied, dry and sweetish. A bitter, sweet, spiced and very warm flavor finishes the whole thing. A decent one, but way too focused on alcohol. 090821

Pitcher pour at 2009 GABF. Pours a thin head, over a clear pale yellow (SRM 3) body.....nose has some spice (clove, coriander) toffee....taste is dominated by sweetness, with a hot finish....mouth feel is light, as is carbonation. This unfortunately was completely unbalanced and dominated by the sweetness. Interestingly, the volunteer doing the serving said "you’ll like the barrel aged better". Tasting on 9/26/09.

Pours a deep orange color, with frothy off-white head. Lots of banana in this one, sweet malt, caramel, and some spice. I didnt get as much of the alchohol as some other people did apparently.
