Commercial Description:
Here at Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the first breweries to pioneer a Double IPA style beer. In 2003, we brewed our first Double IPA, and haven’t looked back since. This hop monster uses Premium American 2- Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. The recipe calls for hops to be used in every step of the brewing process; in the mash, in a hop back, in the fermenter, and in the bright tanks. We use hop extract, hop pellets and hop flowers, hence the name Hop Juice. Hop Juice spends more than 4 weeks dry hopping in the fermenter and the bright beer tank. It is approximately 9.4% abv and has massive IBUs. Hop usage is over 4lbs per barrel. Hopeheads, step up to the plate! Nose is pleasant cereal, grainy malt with a touch of resin and fruity sweetness. Flavor is boozy citric sweetness and that’s about it. Tasted almost exactly like Southern Comfort. Really let down, i had good hopes for this one - but the booze overpowered any good structure/flavors it may have had.

GABF 2009. Pours clear light yellow with a small, fizzy white head, mostly diminishing with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cookie, hay, straw, cereal), heavy hop (flowers, grass, pine, resin), average yeast (sweat) with notes of pear, peach, honey, and apricot. Medium bodied, alcoholic texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Long duration, light sweetness, heavy acidity and bitterness.

Bomber from the original Foodery location in Philly. Pours a hazy bright orange under a dusky white head. Beautiful glow. Strong pine forest aroma with suggestions of grapefruit and white pepper. A lot of citrus in the flavor with some bittersweet chocolate, vanilla and a pretty beefy malt backbone. Rich and silky texture with a snappy finish. Only drawback was that the hop train occasionally tipped a bit off the rails but all in a good West Coast Double.

Location: 22 oz bottle from New Beer, 9/25/09

Aroma: A bitter hop aroma, grapefruit, and some alcohol on the nose as well
Appearance: Hazy golden-orange, bubbly white head, with a nice amount of lace
Flavor: Bitter hop flavor, and a barleywine like maltiness, a drop too much alcohol flavor
Palate: Lasting and crisp finish with quite a bit of ABV burn, a bit dry, with a big mouthfeel
Overall Impression: This was a pretty solid, but not upper-tier DIPA. I found the nose to be nice, while a touch 1 dimensional, but the taste left me a bit more alcohol flavor then I am looking for in a top quality Double IPA. I can certainly appreciate this beer, and I can’t say for sure that I’m getting the best or the newest bottle, but it came off a bit more Barleywine and less IIPA then I was expecting.

22oz bottle. Pours a bright melon orange color with a minimal head of only sparse white lace. Aroma is bitter hopiness, but it does lack a certain citrus-ness that I would have liked. The flavor is also lacking the direct grapefruit flavors of say an Alesmith IPA, but don’t get me wrong... this is quality stuff and I appreciate it. But its second tier.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Deep golden, almost no head. Sweaty lychee aroma, Sweet and full bodied with clean mouthfeel. Salty and very hoppy with clean chewy malt, sweaty orange/pomelo. Very poerful and concentrated. Hugely bitter. Huge beer.

Bomber, split three ways. Pours dark orange with a small head. Aroma has medinical hops, some citrus, and bubble gum sweetness. Palate is medium-thick, with ample carbonation. Flavor starts with a blast of flavor, a hoppy-caramel-red fruit collage that demonstrates balance, dynamism and complexity. The flavors blended together quite sweet, but like a good sweet lemonade, the flavors worked in harmony without sharpness. The finish was strong and warming, though not alcoholic. Although I do prefer more bitter-hoppy DIPAs, this one at least succeeds in achieving memorable balance.

Poured golden orange with a 1/4 inch white head. Nose was not big on hops, fairly floral. Taste was poop. Tasted like old rotten hops, old lettuce, just flavors were a mess.
