Commercial Description:
Here at Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the first breweries to pioneer a Double IPA style beer. In 2003, we brewed our first Double IPA, and haven’t looked back since. This hop monster uses Premium American 2- Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. The recipe calls for hops to be used in every step of the brewing process; in the mash, in a hop back, in the fermenter, and in the bright tanks. We use hop extract, hop pellets and hop flowers, hence the name Hop Juice. Hop Juice spends more than 4 weeks dry hopping in the fermenter and the bright beer tank. It is approximately 9.4% abv and has massive IBUs. Hop usage is over 4lbs per barrel. Hopeheads, step up to the plate! # 15 Bottle. [Papsoe’s great blind tasting, thanks Henrik!] Small fizzy white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Hazy amber color with particles in flow. Aroma of fruit, spice, toasted malt, some underlying floral hoppy feel. Over the palate came heavy hoppy notes with pine, grapefruit, wood, alcohol. Full bodied with an average carbonation and heavy dry texture. Moderated bitter and good counter sweetness. Dry bitter lingering finish. Think it might be a D-IPA or a heavy hopped Barley Wine. 8-3-8-4-16 = 3.9 19-04-2008

22oz. bottle. Huge citrus hop aroma, fresh and green with notes of lime, grapefruit, orange and watermelon, also featuring a certain doughy, cookieish sweetness and plenty of toasty caramel malts, perhaps even a hint of vanilla in the background. Lightly hazy deep golden color with a faint amber cast and a lasting, fine head. A rather large amount of sediment left in the bottle. Flavor is surprisingly well-balanced for the style, with nearly equally massive malt and hop profiles, the hops contributing a copious amount of citrus and pine, as well as a resinous, drying bitterness, countered by a colossal malt base, bringing sweetness in the form of honey, caramel and light brown sugar, almost candyish, some bubblegum and cake-like notes present. Finishes with a blend of tingling bitterness and warming alcohol. Mouthfeel is full, creamy and oily, body is appropriately massive. Really tasty stuff here. Thanks to Josh!

2008-04-18. Hazy orange body with a small white head. Strange aroma, floral, dried leaves over resin, citrus notes are well overpowered. Flavour is quite bitter and has a powerful resiny hop character, decent amount of alcohol is revealed. Back of the throat is grabbed by cumulative hoppy growth. Average plus palate. Interesting, I want to love it but its just a bit rough around the edges for me. Bottle from trade with SDbruboy

Some floral hops in aroms. Nothing but bittering hops in the flavor. Very bitter throughout and afterwards, but it’s okay since I only feel like drinking one beer right now.

Tasted 3/31/08. 22oz bomber. Hazy golden hue. White spotty head. Fresh! Flowers and citrus in the nose. Wonderful! Big bitterness. Smooth malts but all hops. Sticky and piney. Nice bitterness. Pow!

Good copper color with nice sized head. Hoppy citrus nose with hints of malt. Flavor was hoppy grapefruit with a real nice blance of malt that had a nice sweet bready taste. Nice mouthfeel that wasn’t too over the top. Good amount of alcohol, yet not too much.

22 oz bomber from PHX last fall. Pours a pretty orange/shiny copper with a persistent thin head that laces the glass nicely. Good carbonation brings forth its sweet resiny perfume. Flavor has a nice balance of hops and bready malt, probably more malt than I’ve had recently in a double IPA. Some alcohol warmth is noticable but not objectionable. <P> The missing link for me was the expected hoppiness in flavor and aroma; there is plenty of hop bitterness. There is some nondescript hop flavor present, but not what I would expect given the name. Ruination is far better according to my taste buds. Still, this is a good beer.
