Commercial Description:
Here at Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the first breweries to pioneer a Double IPA style beer. In 2003, we brewed our first Double IPA, and haven’t looked back since. This hop monster uses Premium American 2- Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. The recipe calls for hops to be used in every step of the brewing process; in the mash, in a hop back, in the fermenter, and in the bright tanks. We use hop extract, hop pellets and hop flowers, hence the name Hop Juice. Hop Juice spends more than 4 weeks dry hopping in the fermenter and the bright beer tank. It is approximately 9.4% abv and has massive IBUs. Hop usage is over 4lbs per barrel. Hopeheads, step up to the plate! Poured amber with an off white head. Aroma of citrus and hops. Solid hop flavor with some citrus hints. Finished rather dry. Not bad.

650 ml bottle from Bevmo. Pours a nice hazy copper color with a small white head that dissipated moderately fast. The aroma has big citrus notes with grapefruit, oranges and a touch of lemon. The flavor is very hops forward with biter piney hops dominating the front, the sides and the finish. Other flavors present include caramel, vanilla, oranges and grapefruit. The mouthfeel is full and malty. On finish the biter hops still dominate and they are a bit harsh and slightly astringent. Overall: This a great IPA for biter ale lovers (based on the beer I sampled). But, based on reading all the varying reviews, I’m betting that the brewery has problems with consistency. Lets hope that they iron out the rough edges. Recommended.

Thanks to cbkschubert for the bomber. Hazy orange color with a small to medium head. Aroma of grapefruit and pine hops with a definite caramel malt signature. Taste is pretty much telling me the same; this is not your standard ’west coast balanced’ ale. Big malt backbone. Finished with a citrusy bitterness that bordered on astringence.

(bottle from T’s liquors): Pours a semi-cloudy orange body, small white head, quickly diminishing. Piney hoppy aroma. Some malts, dry. Dry taste, hops, acidic. Bitter. Warming up, not as bitter, but still dry & constricting.

22 oz bottle, via kmweaver. Pours a clear copper to orange body under a nice frothy off-white head that receded to a creamy film leaving heavy lace as it receded. The nose is not as bright as I hoped for, it’s actually pretty well balanced, not what springs to mind for a true West Coast IIPA. Floral and lightly piney hops with a hefty sweet caramel malt base. The flavor again was alot more heavy on the sweet malt than expected. The focus of this really seems to be the malt. The hops are there for sure, piney and citrusy up front with a slight resiny stickiness on the finish. Only moderately bitter. I’m getting a bit much iced tea crystal-maltiness on the finish as well for my tastes. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with a slightly syrupy texture and moderate fine fizzy carbonation. Overall, a decent enough beer in and of itself, but a letdown from what I had pictured in my mind coming from Oggis.

Lost of hops as you can imagine. Some citrus and other hop oils. A bit wierd and dirty. Moist and greasy with some sweetness.

Bottle: Amber in color, large foamy off-white head, good retention, nice lacing, light carbonation.   Citrus, pine, and hop oriented nose.   Smells quite nice.   Does smell a little rough, or green tho.   In other words, very zesty.   Aside from the strong hop/citrus rind presense, I am getting spikes of earth and grains.   Lingering citrus rind.   A little puckering, to which I would say this could use more malt backing.   A little lopsided as far as I am concerned.   Fairly full bodied, mouthfeel is moderate.   I am pretty peculiar about my IIPAs, and this one does need a touch more sweetness, and a bit more malt.   Just not syrupy enough for my tastes.   While it hits the mark on bitterness, its a bit raw and rough without a touch of sweetness and a good malt backing.   Enjoyable, but too one sided.   Thanks Larry for the bottle!
