Commercial Description:
Here at Left Coast Brewing Co. we pride ourselves on being one of the first breweries to pioneer a Double IPA style beer. In 2003, we brewed our first Double IPA, and haven’t looked back since. This hop monster uses Premium American 2- Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. The recipe calls for hops to be used in every step of the brewing process; in the mash, in a hop back, in the fermenter, and in the bright tanks. We use hop extract, hop pellets and hop flowers, hence the name Hop Juice. Hop Juice spends more than 4 weeks dry hopping in the fermenter and the bright beer tank. It is approximately 9.4% abv and has massive IBUs. Hop usage is over 4lbs per barrel. Hopeheads, step up to the plate! Labeled as Left Coast Hop Juice. Great burnt orange color with a big off white head. Aroma is a nice blend of citrus, pine, and caramel malt. Big thick mouthfeel with perfect carbonation. The taste follows the aroma and has a good balance--but is definitely hop forward. Great bitter hop kick in the finish.

Big thanks to cbkschubert for this one. Pours turbid orangy coppery with 1-finger off-white head. Aroma is bready caramel malt, tangerine, pineapple, mango, black pepper, some spicy funky. It tastes somewhat dry, very sticky, with bready caramel malt, tons of hops, tangerine, pineapple, some spicy notes, and some ending flowery notes. Very good.

22oz bottle, no date. My label also claims 9.4% ABV. Clear medium orange with a one finger slightly yellow orange white head, somewhat creamy but didn’t stick around terribly long. The first whiffs bring about pineapple juice (I don’t think I’ve ever gotten pineapple juice in a beer before) and some grainy caramel malts. A bit of nondescript citrus is also present. Flavor is dirty, herbal, with some abrasive ethanol. There are still some citrus hops, but those first things take over and crap out the flavor. Herbal is usually not bad, but here it doesn’t fly--maybe it’s more green weeds than an herbal character. Bitterness peaks at a 6. Low carbonation with a full body. Not a fan.

22 oz. bottle labelled as Left Coast Hop Juice Double IPA. The ABV is listed as 9.4% on the bottle. Pours a hazy orange gold with a moderate yellow/white head that lasted until about mid-glass. Very nice hoppy citrus aroma of lemons and grapefruit with some pine notes as well. The flavor was dominated more by the pine than the citrus with some caramel malt lingering in the background. Dry and bitter at the finish - a bit excessive for my tastes.

On tap: Big citrusy hopped aroma with light caramel, alcohol, and a hint of pineapple. It’s a transparent amber with a small white head that lasts a minute before fading to a film that leaves behind thin webbing for lacing. Strong citrus hop flavor right from the start. Mild caramel and fruit in the background. Light alcohol in the finish. Medium-full bodied with a slight syrupy texture with mild carbonation.

Bomber, pours a clear golden with a foamy tan head that drifts down to a whispy covering, minimal lacing. Aroma is a big hop blend - pine, floral, citrus, grapefruit, with only the slightest caramel presence. Flavor is a bitter hops bite, that borderlines on being an overbearing tounge scraper. Only a minimal caramel corn sweetness comes out in the middle, and some warming on the finish. Not bad, but prefer DIPA’s to have some more balance than this one...

22 oz. Bottle, labeled Hop Juice Left Coast. Also it listed the alcohol as 9.4% ABV. Very complex beer, alot going on. Citrus and toffee nose. Chocolate roasted malt, with pine and grapefruit flavors. Even a green apple taste with alcohol coming thru. A long dry after taste. A little bit different Double IPA.

Poured from a 22 oz. Thick, bright and bold orange appearance. Burly aroma of blonde brownies, weed, pine; nectarine, pastry and dirty toffee. Altogether quite pungent with catty and urinal tones, dirty and awkward; though it’s hard to define just what the flaws are in this case, their basic presence is glaringly apparent. Syrupy, sweet flavor; burnt grahams, oily hops, dirt, apple peels. Dark sugars, orange, and kiwi, with gritty minerals and iron in earthy coating. Slick and abrasive palate; offensively rough around the edges. Predictably difficult, reckless, and unpleasant. Thanks for sharing, Ryan!
