Wonderful aroma of chocolate, coffee, and cream. Medium mouthfeel that leads to a nice crisp taste. The chocolate and coffee are evident along with some malt. Finishes clean and hoppy. A good porter. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Bottled. A clear dark red near black beer with a medium sized disappearing brown head. Nice roasty aroma, with some notes of hops and dark chocolate. Soft, smooth, some roastiness in the taste that has chocolate notes. It finishes with a nice bitterness. Light to medium body, lively carbonation, enough long finish. There is also alight sourness. a nice porter, and as usual a good product from Left Hand, but not my favourite from this brewery. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 31, 2007 Bottle from Winking Lizard. Poured a dark brown, very little head. Very light hints of chocolate with a lot of sweet malts. Hops were very very mild. This was a bit watery on the palate, but otherwise, a very decent, drinkable stout... | 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 29, 2007 this brew offers some promise: first the well drafted label, then an almost opaque black-brown color with a creamy head ...
however neither the smell (charcoal, licorice and fresh hay) nor the rather soapy taste envoque any comparison to the real great porters, nor to the elegance of some eastern german or czech dark lagers ...
nice try, but not much above average ... cgarvieuk (4212), Edinburgh, Scotland

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 28, 2007 12/28/2007: Left Hand Black Jack Porter pours a clean and clear brown color with a slowly receeding, pillowy, dark beige head. The aroma includes chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. This beer has a really smooth dark chocolate flavor (think Hershey’s Special Dark) with some coffee, roasted malt, and bitterness in the finish. There is a nice level of residual sweetness without being too much. The flavor and roastiness is more robust than the <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/left-hand-milk-s Hand Milk Stout and I think the coffee comes through a bit more too. The palate is medium with a smooth texture. Overall I would say that the aromas and flavors are balanced and this beer is solid and really easy to drink.

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 25, 2007 12oz bottle. Very dark cola brown body with a 2 finger thick light brown head. Mostly diminishing and leaves behind only spotty lacing. A topping of craggy foam is all that’s left after a minute or two once everything else settles down. Nose of chocolate pudding mix, dairy creamer, roasted coffee beans, dark roasted malts and licorice. Smells pretty damn good. Don’t get any sense of hops in the aroma, just a kickass sweetness backed by a ton of roast. Fore is very sweet, tons of milk chocolate, hot cocoa, coffee beans, vanilla, malts and maybe some dark fruit hints. Light-medium bodied, watery on the edges, but nothing jarring or terrible. Very light astringency but overall this is really easy to drink, nothing gets in the way of that aspect. Finish is sweet, like the rest of the beer, and then finishes with a long roasted/charred bean kick. Sweetness in all facets of the beer seems like it would get overwhelming but it’s really held in check throughout. If we could get this in six packs, this would be in my fridge all the time right alongside their milk stout. Awesome porter. mds (2112), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Dec 23, 2007 Bottle. Pours an almost completely black body with just a miniscule amount of light appearing along the edges and a medium-size, lasting tan head. The aroma is predominately chocolate and coffee roast along with just a touch of fruity resin.
Flavour is sweet with creamy milk chocolate and light almond in the finish. Thins out significantly as it warms.
