Sammy (2939), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 3, 2008 Not retired, as there is a 2008 version now out. I had last year’s. Not too hoppy, but significant. Not too malty but significant. An easy drinking, dangerously hidden alcohol. Good head initially. Nothing outstanding but it was enjoable and satisfying.
argo0 (6003), Washington DC, USA Jul 3, 2008 (750ml bottle) Murky brown body with small beige head. Aroma is moderately sweet, orange/floral, caramel, some berry. Taste is moderately sweet, orange, pine, some floral, caramel. Medium-full body, some resin, light acidity. Oakes (6771), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Jul 2, 2008 Dull amber and slightly hazy. Chewy aroma with caramel and dried fruits and some woody hops. The palate is soft but chewy, a result of an intense caramel start mixing with an alcoholic finish. The sticky sugars this leaves on the palate clash a little bit with the dull woody hops. There are some pleasant characteristics here, but the structure seems either ill-conceived or the exectuion clumsy. Joakgust (52), Stockholm, Sweden Jul 2, 2008 Bottle, 75cl - Hazy amber colored beer with a big orange head. Strong sweet malty aroma with hints of caramel and grapefruit. Flavor is quite sweet with heavy notes of grapefruits, licorice, ripe dark fruits and some salty bitterness. A pretty deep beer, leaning towards barley wine levels. kmweaver (1762), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Jun 28, 2008 750mL bottle, courtesy of argo0. Thanks, Aaron! Pours a murky, yellowish-brown color; light tan head with patchy lacing. Lots of dried caramel upfront in the aroma; slightly medicinal red fruits, sticky malts, and pleasant herbal bitterness; nice nose, actually; smells like it has some age behind it, though I’m not sure that it does. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy dried caramel, red fruits, and herbal / earthy bitterness; seems much like an aged, lightly-malted barleywine; pretty pleasant overall. Touch of alcohol at the far end. Lengthy finish: caramel, candy sugar, and some bitterness. MartiniFiend (44), Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, USA Jun 28, 2008 Bottle. Pours dark copper with a small beige head and FULL OF SEDIMENT! Any unfilterd beer in my book is worth drinking for that reason alone. This beer gives you all kinds of reasons to drink it. Nice aroma of sweet malted barley and hops. Thick and creamy palate. Flavor starts out malty with a sweet middle and a hop finish. This a realy fine ale!
