RedSox2004 (353), Pacific Palisades, California, USA Jan 25, 2008 Poured a deep red/brown with an attractive light tan head about half an inch thick that stayed around and left a nice lacing.
I loved the aroma, but recognize that it’s definitely a personal thing - chocolate, caramel, and molasses.
Malt was dominant in the taste, with cocoa, caramel and nuttiness.
Nice full body with pleasant aftertaste.
A very nice surprise from the beer club. posikyle (165), Alabama, USA Jan 23, 2008 The only brown ale I have really liked. Pours a nice almost golden brown color, yeasty aroma. Flavor is maltier than most brown ales, a little sweet. Bungalo22 (326), Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA Jan 22, 2008 A light golden brown pour from a bottle into a pilsner glass. Light carmel smell but an unsatisfying follow through. The finish was nice though as it held up and ended much better than it started. dkoonce (880), People’s Republic of Athens, Ohio, USA Jan 22, 2008 Bottle. Pours copper/brown, with a generous tan head that fades to a half-inch. Sweet malty aroma, with obvious caramel and vanilla leaves me anticipating this beer. The taste doesn’t disappoint. Very sweet, with a chocolate, caramel and vanilla flavor that reminds me of a cream soda. Very impressive for such a sweet beer. It balances a sweetness with a fizzy, live mouth feel. johnnysmoke (53), Texas, USA Jan 20, 2008 I’m really surprised by the overall low rating this beer has received. While it’s not as "dark tasting" as I was expecting it did deliver on taste, appearance and flavor. Part of my beer a month selection this is better than the Otter Creek Pale Ale I rated earlier today. I’d drink this again. It had a nice aroma, a sweet chocolate cherry taste, good carbonation ElGaucho56 (386), USA Jan 18, 2008 Pours a clear thin brown with mildly off-white small head. Nose is slightly roasty, sweet, nutty, and with a note of chocolate. Very similar wooden, pine hop profile to the sawtooth ale, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the same recipe with toasted malts added. Thin and fizzy on the palate. Finishes sweet, hardly any bitterness to perk the palate up. Not so great. truebluehes (104), Tipton, Iowa, USA Jan 12, 2008 Bottle. Brownish-red pour with head trace. Aroma is nutty roasted malt with a little hops. Flavor is strong lightly roasted malt with a touch of caramel.... a bit watery. pumpkinheart (63), Aurora, Illinois, USA Jan 12, 2008 Poured from 12 oz. bottle into recommended dimpled mug. Pleasant levels of the roasted malts and light chocolate aromas come across. Not much in the way of a lasting head or lacing. The beer drinks lighter and has a less heavy and clinging mouthfeel than many brown ales. I really enjoyed the balanced flavors and nice, not overly dry and bitter hoppiness at the end. As a previous rater noted, theis a brown ale that could be sessioned, making for a nice change of pace.
