Commercial Description:
Imperial Stout is a silky smooth, very flavorful black brew. It is a traditional style of strong stout originally brewed in Britain for export to St. Petersburg, Russia. The malty sweetness of the beer is tempered by a medley of roasted malt and the aggressive use of hops. A long conditioning time gives the brew time to mellow and mature. The beer is not filtered, allowing every subtlety and nuance to be enjoyed.

Circa 2006 bottle. Pours on the brown side of black, slightly opaque. No head to speak of whatsoever. Bottle shows clearly bottle-conditioned. Aroma is of deep malt sweetness and roast. Taste is of typical imperial stout, though a little thinner than most. Lots of roast, a touch of chocolate and coffee, and some rum/syrup taste on the back of the tongue. Flavor thickens up considerably as it warms; the rum/syrup taste becomes much more pronounced. Very well-balanced and tasty. A good beer.

Pours slightly murky-cola into the glass, with a diminishing tan head that leaves little to no lace. Big nose of currants, figs, dark fruits, roasts and some maple syrup. The taste seems a take on the dry genre, with many roasted and bitter dark chocolates, smoked peat, and hints at tobacco. Some alcohol is noted to the dry-hopped finish. A clean pull with a lasting roasted finish. Definitely improves as it warms, and although not the best impy stout I’ve ever had, it’s certainly nothing to scoff at.

22 oz bottle. Very black pour with a slow rising head that dissipates into swispy swirls. Big chocolate and roasty nose. Flavor complex. Notes of vanilla, milk chocolate, roasted malts, rum, and yes, even maple syrup. Full bodied and a creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is somewhat detectable. This one will age well.

Almost black. Moderate head. Huge aroma that comes to you rather than having to lift the glass. Chocolate and chocolate and coffee. The closer you get to the glass the more the chocolate increases along with some charcoal-type notes. Flavour is chocolate and sweet. Body is smooth and thick. As you drink alcohol climbs over the chocolate. Big on alcohol and chocolate. A little thin on depth for style. Good.

My bottle (22oz) shared with GregClow, jerc & mabel -- courtesy of kevin. Pours a very dark brown, pretty much black, with a small diminishing tan head. Nice aroma of roasted malt, some vanilla, chocolate, coffee and light hops. Flavour follows the aroma: Roasted malt, coffee, a hint of chocolate and light hops. Some smoky notes in there too. Alcohol well hidden. Medium bodied. Very good stuff.
