Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

On tap at the Flying Saucer in KC. Pours a deep brown, almost black body with a two-finger width, dense and creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate amount of soapy lacing. Aroma is light and soft across the board. Roasts, milk chocolate, lactose, and some cherry. Flavor is better, but still a little too soft. Starts with milky chocolate and a light malt then moves inot a soft roast and somewhat sour cherry middle before finishing wiht some lactose, smooth chocolate, soft roasts, and a touch of almost astringent citrus bitterness. Dry with a decent lingering taste of milky and chocolate roasts. Light to medium bodied and smooth. Overall, better tasting than I anticipated, but still nothing to write home about. A little light bodied, some fullness could do this well.

Bottle from Sam’s. Pours pretty much black, allowing some light around the edges. Smallish beige head with nice retention. Had an 8 Ball Stout last night and found it far superior. This one focuses much more on the "sweet" part of sweet stout. Lots of milk sugar, milk chocolate, and caramel. Thin palate. A good summer stout, I suppose, but not really my thing.

Bottle. Poured black with a brown head. Aroma was rich but sweet, notes of chocolate and candy bars. Flavor was sweet and full throughout, main note was milk chocolate. Nice for the style.

Had on draft at the brewery. Lighter in body than stouts that I really prefer, but the roasted malts and coffee overtones and sweet beginnings make this a very east drinking session stout. Very fresh and highly carbonated, soft yet full of flavor.

Very good aroma with flavors of chocolate and coffee. Dark and creamy, this beer is wonderfully drinkable. A great Stout.

12 oz. bottle. Pour at first appears black, but held to bright light is actually exceptionally deep ruby. Short creamy tan head subsides to a thin ring as it warms. Aroma is of chocolate and deep roasted malts. Taste is more of same, with roasty edge softened by the sweet lactose. Body is moderate and palate smooth. A fine cream stout.

I sampled a bottle of this at a neat little wine bar in Mount Dora, FL. Pours a dark color but not quite black with a thin dark brown head. Flavor shows a nice dose of chocolate with some coffee following. Palate is creamy, soft, and gentle hop bitterness in the finish. As this warms I get a bit of roast in there. Not overly complex but this is a nice drink. Better than expected.
