Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

On tap at Reggie’s. Promised a lot, but didn’t see things through to the end, as enigmatic as that sounds. Ar: Raisins, chocolate, liquorish and possibly a bit of mango? Ap: Creamy white head, pours a dark brown and decent head retention w/ pretty gravel lacing. Fl: Raisins, chocolate milk, molasses and the most evanescent hoppiness that peeks through without remaining pinned down. Tasty beer that lacked the oomph of FFF’s Moloko.

12 oz bottle purchased at Corral Liquors, Granite City,Il. Pours mahogany with a 1/4 inch beige head. Minimal aroma of coffee/chocolate. More flavor than I would have thought with the mild aroma. It feel a little thin and a bit more carbonated than I would like.

12 oz bottle from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA. Pours the shade of coffee with a moderate tan head and some solid lacing. Mostly chocolate in the nose, with light bits of coffee and a slight nuttiness. Taste is all chocolate creaminess with a hint of coffee. One of the smoothest finishes I’ve ever experienced.

Sampled on 4/27/2009. This sweet stout pours a eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Small sized beige foamy head with a decent lacing but little to no retention. The aroma is chocolate and coffee and a touch sweet. A light to medium bodied sweet stout. The malts are roasted/burnt malts, chocolate and coffee. The hops are earthy and herbal. There is a lot of coffee bitterness without a lot of sweetness to balance it out in this beer. It seems a little thin and watery as well. Nice carbonation. This one just doesn’t do much for me. Mouthfeel is a touch thin. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Dark coffee brown pour with a two finger, creamy head, decent retention and good looking lace. Chocolate, nuts, and coffee on the nose. Nice smooth body and easy on the carbonation. Taste is chocolate roasted malt and a little hop bitterness. I didn’t expect much from this one based on past experiences with Left Hand - This is by far my favorite of their brews that I’ve tried so far.
