Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

Bottle. Black with a small head. Aromas are chocolate and coffee with low bitterness. Milky sweetness is pronounced and welcome. Flavours are sweet and obviously milky which is a change from the lactose stouts I’ve had previously. Rich smooth chocolate with light roast malts. Quite simply a really pleasant drink.

nice sweet aroma - this brew tasted smooth and creamy - not too bitter - nice aftertaste - I think I could have used a bit more flavor but not sure what... might be a bit smooth for my palatte. Would enjoy this beer again.

One of Left Hand’s better brews. It pours dark black with minimal head. Has aromas of roasted coffee and malts. The sugars from the milk come out nicely and it has a smooth mouth feel to it. Pretty good beer

Bottle @ home. Pours black, off-white head. Aroma of coffee, roasted malts and sweetness. Taste is thin, sweet, coffee, roasted malts. The milk sugar is too sweet for me, didn’t really enjoy this beer. Very smooth mouthfeel though.

Near black pour, fairly miniscule tan head. Rich smell of mocha and roast malt. Chocolate with roasted tones, lactose. Smooth, nice finish. Could have used just a little more something, not quite sure what though. Still good. Need to try again.

Bottle from ’Beersofeurope.co.uk’: Pours a pure black with a thin tan head that vanishes quickly. Aroma of sweet chocolate and malt. Rich flavour with coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Quite thick with a lovely mouthfeel. Very nice stout.

Very creamy head. Dark as sin colorwise. Very pungent aroma of chocolate and roasted malts. Wonderful flavor. Not extremely bitter with lots of sweetness from the lactose addition. Smooth going down the palate. I have to confess that this is one of my favorite styles of stout and this is definately one of the better milk stouts I’ve had. I had it a LONG time ago, but haven’t seen it around the SF Bay Area for quite some time. Would buy this again and again if it was readily available.
