Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

33cl bottle. Poured an unclear, deep ruby colour with a generous, foamy tan head that was slow to dissipate leaving a layer encircling the glass. Sweet, plummy, chocolately flavours combine with roasted malts and a coffee on the nose. Dominant notes of choclate and coffee flavours with a slightly perfumey backdrop. A roasty, bitter dryness in the finish, which is of average length. Solid, smooth mouthfeel, good carbonation but the overall body of the beer might be a bit lacking in terms of dimension.

I got this 12 oz bottle at Legal Seafoods in Boston at Copley Plaza. Poured a cloudy brown with a moderate sized tan head and good lacing rings. Nose is of roasted malts with chocolate, coffee, and raisins. Mouthfeel is robust but still smooth. Flavor is chocolate in the main, with some coffee notes. Finish is dry and lightly bitter.

Pours a deep, dark brown with a dark tan head. Smells of roast malts, maybe a little chocolate and coffee as well. Rich flavors, nice and creamy. Taste is of milk chocolate and a little hint of coffee as well. Nothing astounding here, but a quality beer overall.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, almost black, some red highlights. Small offwhite head. Sweet aroma of coffee and chocolate, some nuts, caramel. Flavour is sweet, some bitter coffee notes, otherwise much the same as the aroma. A little bit thin and watery. Nothing amazing, but nice and drinkable.

Deep brown pour with off white head. Coffee and cream aroma. Medium bitterness followed by a medium body of chocolate, coffee and vanilla beans. Nice beer.

Great thickness but not heavy. Distinct but not overpowering taste whatsoever.

seems like a beer with not a whole lot of alcohol but a lot of calories. screw that. warm, roasted balanced with sweet malt. its pretty good, but rich, and filling, and not terribly comnplex on the flavor. for the filling-ness of it, i would rather go with some more complex, like an impy.

On tap. Poured really dark brown with a light white head. Aroma of roasted malt, nut, chocolate, caramel. Taste is malty, nutty, little chocolate, sweet & creamy. Mouth is creamy and smooth. Overall, a decent sweet stout.
