Commercial Description:
This English style of beer, also known as Sweet Stout or Cream Stout, first appeared in London in the late 1800’s. The early brewers touted the health benefits of the milk sugar in this beer which today relates mainly to the increased amount of calories(no real health benefits…sorry). The milk sugar adds a well rounded sweetness to this dark beer and makes it an outstanding, year ‘round stout.

[Sampled March 2008 - tasted blind] A dark deep red beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel, roasted malt, and chocolate. The flavor is sweet malty with strong notes of caramel, but also lighter notes of chocolate and vanilla, like an ice cream topping. The hints of alcohol tickles the palate.[7/4/7/4/15=3.7]

[First sample, February 2004] A deep red beer with a fine brown head. The aroma is very fruity with roasted and stouty notes - just as a stout is supposed to be. The flavor is fantastic; sweet malty with notes of roasted malt, coffee, and hints of chocolate. A fantastic beer - one of the best I’ve had. I wish I had this one available. [7/5/10/4/19=4.5]

Bottled. Black with small beige head. Roasty chocolate aroma. Sweet and mild with clean mouthfeel and capuccino finish.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Pours a clear, reddish brown with a creamy, off-white head. Lightly sweetish aroma of chocolate and hard roasted malts. Medium body, lightly sweet roasted malt and also both chocolate and coffee notes. The finish is short and dry. Quite pleasant. 250308

Light brown and hazy. Aroma of chocolate and almond, and lots of starch. The body is a bit thin. Profile is mainly chocolatey but kind of vague with the thin nuttiness of a mailed-in brown ale. It’s okay, but not nearly full enough for a milk stout.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a dark red hue, creamy milk chocolate head. Roasted malt and chocolate aroma. Creamy mouthfeel. Soft malty flavoured containing roasted malt and chocolate malt. Nice mellow finish with no hops. Very enjoyable.7-4-7-4-15=3.7

From bottle, 5A Papsoes New Zealand vs US blind tasting. Pours amber/brown with a lacing tan white head. Smooth chocolate malt aroma. Mild coffee and chocolate malt flavour. Solid acidic note. Light fruity note. Ends with a lingering coffee and roasted malt flavour but still with a smooth chocolate note.7-4-7-4-15=3.7
