Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Brown pour with a sweet aroma of berries and cocoa. Little oak detected in the scent. The oak is is noticed, but it is kind of subtle. Thinner body than expected. Pretty smooth palate. My complaint here is that the flavors don’ really explode. Not bad though. This is optimally experienced at a warmer temperature.

Brownish/garnet in color with a small off-white head, decent retention and sticky lace. Aroma of oak, cherry and licorice. Tastes like bakers chocolate, cherry, a pinch of vanilla and some coffee. Lighter body than I expected, minimal carbonation, alcohol well hidden. Could have gone for a fuller body on this one (an imperial stout) but I guess that is only my personal preference.

Bomber courtesy of BOLTZ7555 – thanks Jason! Pours a deep reddish brown with a one finger tan head that leaves spotty lacing. The nose is faint chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is molasses, faint dark fruits, roasted malt and cocoa with oaky booze in the finish. Medium bodied. Decent BA IS, but needs some time to mellow out the booze.

On tap at Old C’s. Black color aroma has dry chocolate malt and oak notes. This had a barley wine feel with a vinous like dark fruit taste complimented with a roasted chocolate malt taste that gives way to hops. I though is was just a tad too dry, but the taste was very nice. I recommend this.

2009 bottle from Jonpol at AJs. Pours black with a ruby tint and a trim oatmeal colored head. Smells of smoked malts, baker’s cocoa, alcohol, and faint hops. Tastes of each along with additional notes of stiky plums, tart cherries, copper, black licorice, caramel, and brandy. Plenty of depth in flavor, but slightly hotter than I prefer.

2009 Brandy Barrel version. Not exactly what one would expect from an Impy stout...it fact, this one was a little "wimpy" in aroma and appearance. Faint chocolate, brown sugar, molasses, and oak in the nose. Appearance is mohagany in color with completely transparent edges and a nice creamy tan head. The flavor is where this one improves (and where else would you want an improvement). Dark fruit, cocoa, caramel, and a dash of brandy in there. Medium mouthfeel. Nice.

2009 25/75 brandy barrel blend: Metallic, acidic, somewhat putrid battery acid and caustic lactic acid greet the tongue. Sweet maple/plum/tobacco flavors of the brandy are subtle and mild. Oak is overly-tannic and abrasive while the malt base is astringent and weak-bodied. There’s no fullness and no heft to the body at all. I really, really don’t like this beer. Two tries now with this beer, same experience both times.

Deep brown with soft burgundy light at the edges of the glass. Fizzy mouthfeel, though if you poured the last bit with the yeast it’s more smooth. Mild bourbon and wood note, nothing very robust. Medium bodied for an imperial stout, lots of wood, charred bourbon and chocolate malts. Disappointing, actually, considering the quality of many other barrel aged stouts and porters. Still quite drinkable, however. I actually prefer the standard Left Hand Imperial Stout more with the more pronounced smoke and burnt malt flavors.

Looks: Pours with more carbonation than I would expect from a stout. Taste: very sweet and malty like a barley wine. Thick taste. Some vanilla and oak come through - no doubt from the barrels. Caramel finish.Nice.
