Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

2009 Brandy Barrel version. Not exactly what one would expect from an Impy stout...it fact, this one was a little "wimpy" in aroma and appearance. Faint chocolate, brown sugar, molasses, and oak in the nose. Appearance is mohagany in color with completely transparent edges and a nice creamy tan head. The flavor is where this one improves (and where else would you want an improvement). Dark fruit, cocoa, caramel, and a dash of brandy in there. Medium mouthfeel. Nice.

2009 25/75 brandy barrel blend: Metallic, acidic, somewhat putrid battery acid and caustic lactic acid greet the tongue. Sweet maple/plum/tobacco flavors of the brandy are subtle and mild. Oak is overly-tannic and abrasive while the malt base is astringent and weak-bodied. There’s no fullness and no heft to the body at all. I really, really don’t like this beer. Two tries now with this beer, same experience both times.

Deep brown with soft burgundy light at the edges of the glass. Fizzy mouthfeel, though if you poured the last bit with the yeast it’s more smooth. Mild bourbon and wood note, nothing very robust. Medium bodied for an imperial stout, lots of wood, charred bourbon and chocolate malts. Disappointing, actually, considering the quality of many other barrel aged stouts and porters. Still quite drinkable, however. I actually prefer the standard Left Hand Imperial Stout more with the more pronounced smoke and burnt malt flavors.

Looks: Pours with more carbonation than I would expect from a stout. Taste: very sweet and malty like a barley wine. Thick taste. Some vanilla and oak come through - no doubt from the barrels. Caramel finish.Nice.

Aroma is roasted coffee. Seriously, that’s about all I get out of the aroma on this. Damn. What the hell? Is my nose broken, or is the coffee that overpowering? Some vegetable in there? Maybe? As it warms, I want to say there is cocoa in there. The faint hint of vegetable hasn’t faded, however. I think it is oak more than vegetable. Head, slowly dissipates. Taste is all coffee and a bit of oak, and bitter roasted malts (char). Where the hell is the brandy? Fizzy, sweet, slightly bitter on the finish. Nothing special

Pours out black with thin tan head. Tastes of roasted coffee, chocolate and wood. Slight brandy flavor from wood. Nice alcohol warming. Good brew.

750 ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of wood, leather, cocoa, and some vinous notes. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of cocoa, wood, vanilla, some roastiness and carmel with a smooth lingering bittersweet finish.

Aroma: Dark malt aroma with coffee, and chocolate. The oak and brandy was very faint.
Appearance: Dark brown in color, clear with a thin head.
Flavor: Deep dark malt flavor with a coffee and chocolate addition. The oak and brandy where still faint so I was sad.
Palate: Dry finish, with a Good Stout Mouthfeel.
Overall: A very nice brew. This could have used more time in the barrels. I wish they would take there time and not try to come out with stuff all the time and only release the killer stuff.
