Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

This was black in color with a moderate beige head. The nose is filled with aromas of dark fruits (fig, plum), vanilla crème, milk chocolate and a touch of expresso. In the mouth it was medium to full-bodied, rich and smooth with nice balancing carbonation. This comes off remarkably smooth and completely hides the alcohol. This is a very nice brew that does not get ponderous as I would typically expect from an Imperial Stout of this alcohol content.

[1731-20080928] Bottle. Mildly minty dark roast aroma with dark sweet fruit notes. Murky, dark brown black body with quick light tan bubbles. Mild fruit and dark roast flavour with a long coffee roast finish and subtle wood notes throughout. Medium body. Nice oakiness.

750 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with crimson highlights and a small beige head. The aroma is chocolate, molasses, oak, and roasted malt. The flavor is roasted malt, chocolate, oak, slight bourbon that becomes boozy, with a touch of dark fruitiness. This is at times a touch harsh. I thought this would be a bit fuller bodied than it was. Decent, but I expected quite a bit more from this one.

Bottle, 2007. Sampled 12/25/2008. Pours a coffee black with s thin tan head. Nose is strong with oak, coffee, and chocolate. Flavors are oak predominantly first. Wonderful notes of chocolate, raisins, coffee, and black licorice come in a little later. Very full bodied and warm. Very good imperial stout!

750ml bottle given to me by brad as part of PF10. 2007 vintage... pours a very dark brown, almost black with a thin light brown head.... aroma made up of chocolate, grains almost like a oatmeal stout, and a little smoked wood... flavors start on the chocolate side and then turn a little bitter with fruit in the finish. a little boozy with a warming effect. mouthfeel somewhat thin and would have done better with a little more body.

Bottle. Its rare i dont finish a stout but something about this beers harsh ending just made me uninterested. Oak, vanilla and then a big malty alcohol warming with a big bitter hoppiness. not for me.

Muddy brown orange pour. Odd for an IS. Chocolate, vanilla, oak, and fruit cake on the aroma. Oak tartness, chocolate, wood, roast, a touch of smoke. Carb is flat. Was not interesting to me.

Sampled at the stout tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 10/13/08. 2007 version. Pours a dark brown with a 1/4 inch head. Aroma is strong chocolate with some alcohol. Flavor is much more mild and enjoyable than their pre-aged impy stout. Creamy and sugary with lots of chocolate and a bit of roasty character.
