Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Sampled at the stout tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 10/13/08. 2007 version. Pours a dark brown with a 1/4 inch head. Aroma is strong chocolate with some alcohol. Flavor is much more mild and enjoyable than their pre-aged impy stout. Creamy and sugary with lots of chocolate and a bit of roasty character.

2007 bottle. Pours a murky dark brown with some think off-white head. Nose is quite fruity, a touch of smoke and roast and chocolate, vanilla oak comes through a bit. Quite sweet in the mouth, some cardboard and oak, chocolate and roasty with a fair bit of residual bitterness at the end. Fairly smooth and lush with some drying astringency.

This is an excellent american version of the famous "Russian Imperial Stout". This has it all- rich and chocolatey, with some coffee, vanilla, and just the right sweetness up front with a bitter finish. The brew has a fairly thin mouthfeel for a stout, but that isn’t bad in this case. In fact I have never actually tasted any imported Imperial Stout that was better. On par with Stones Rus. Imp. Stout. The oaken wine barrels mellow the taste. Very tasty and a "BIG" beer indeed. There is a beer that it kinda reminds me of interms of mouthfeel and flavor. That would be Blue Grass Brewing’s (BBC’s) Russian Imperial Porter is very similar in flavor, mouthfeel, ABV, and appearance.

Aroma is sweet with coffee notes. Color is solid black with good carbonation and a thin tight tan head. Taste is crisp, nutty and roasted. Starting with a bold medium body it goes down crisp and a little lighter then I was expecting. Finish comes in sweet with coffee and raisin then a faint bitterness that has vanilla and oak tones to it. After taste is roasted with a hint of alcohol and a little wine like taste that rolls in at the end. This is a nice Imperial Stout, very drinkable with a little lighter body then some.
