Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

750ml from Sam’s, Durham. While not really a fan of LH’s imperial brews, I have to say that this was a fairly impressive offering. Thick black pour, and very creamy, with a nice chocolatey aroma. Roasted malts underneath testify to the strong base beer, fairly pleasing, but the oak qualities that emerge are refreshing subtle (maybe this is because it’s not the typical bourbon aging?). At any rate, glad to try this one.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Garthicus, and Blankboy, courtesy of blankboy. Black, but lots of red hues, good sized bubbly tan head. Very mild aroma - some roast, maybe some alcohol. Taste is nice - soft body, lots of oak (vanilla), some alcohol - very pleasant. A subdued but very drinkable impy.

Mahogany pour that throws up an off-white head. Smooth coffee aroma. Smooth flavor that follows the aroma. Lightly sweet, roasty.

Bottle. Sweet nose, light chocolate and coffee. Ruby-tinted black with a thin head. Lots of chocolate and coffee, a touch of oak, but not particularly interesting but very much drinkable.

Courtesy of Maniac. Very dark mahogany clear with small rocky head. Big aroma of raisins plums and roasty malts with some alchohol. Sweet grainey roast malt flavor with peppery hop bitterness and nice alchohol warming. Medium mouthfeel with some sherry and oak in the finish. Slight bitter husky astringency. Butters’ 100th rating (and way past my bedtime)!

Bottle thanks to mreusch. Pours a dark brown with decent foamy head. Nose of roasted coffee, bourbon, and hint of vanilla. Flavor is woody, sweet, and some coffee. Reminded me of a lightly carbinated vanilla coke. Texture and body are medium, not sludge at all. Very smooth and not too heavy for style.
