Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Thanks to lawstudent09 or whatever... Kyle. Solid oak nose with burnt malt sweetness. Creamy body with massive sweet burnt malt and faint oak funk.

For an imperial stout, a style full of great beers, I thought this beer was a bit of a disappointment. This beer poured an opaque black with a finely formed head. Aroma was chocolate-y, but tasted very stale, by which I don’t mean stale beer (oxidized), but I mean the chocolate seemed stale. Flavor was chocolate-y, but the dominating taste was day old coffee. Mouthfeel was full & good. I can’t say I’d really recommend this beer.

Sampled at an Imperial Stout tasting
Poured black with light tan head. Smell was roasty malt, and a doughy, gooey nose. Very light oaked character noticeable to me. Light bodied somewhat, but this is perhaps an aged bottle that has mellowed it. Goes down very easy, and lighter than most Imperial Stouts, I thought. Nice beer.

From a 750ml bottle from 2007. Pours a dark brown/black with ruby hues when held to the light. A little thin for an imperial stout. Very roasty beer, with strong chocolate tones and a hint of alcohol. Just a bit of oak in the background, but not as much as I was expecting. Overall, a great imperial stout. We uncorked this on a freezing cold day while brewing outside, and it definately warmed us up. I’d like to age one for a while and see if it improves.

750ml caged&corked bottle from 2004, courtesy of CaptainCougar. Pours an opaque black with a medium-sized, tan head that laces the glass. The aroma is sweet and malty with some chocolate, coffee, and vanilla. The flavor was delectable and sublime. It begins sweet with a bitter, roasted character - but no harshness or burnt flavors. The beer is amazingly smooth for such a dark, roasty beer that is over 10%. The flavor of vanilla is all over this beer. Some balancing, fruity hops enter the palate around mid-tongue. The finish is full with an excellent bittersweet flavor of chocolate and vanilla with a subtle touch of hop bitterness. Overall, absoluitely awesome.

Bottle 2007. Pours a dark amber brown. Large tan head with very nice lacing. Aroma of sweet malts, vanilla, and subtle molasses. Flavors of bourbon, malt, vanilla, and subtle chocolate. Very smooth full body beer, with a slight dry after taste.

Bottle, 2007. Heavy malt aromas of cereal, toasted, milk chocolate and strong coffee, light hops of herbs, moderate note of earth for the yeast, and wood, smoke, postum and bandaid in the background. Head is creamy with some larger bubbles, off-white, with fair lacing and is fully lasting. Color is dark brown to black with noticable sparkling along the glass. Flavor starts moderately sweet, lightly acidic and sour, then finishes lightly acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium tofull, between creamy and syrupy and has a lively carbonation. It finishes lightly astringent and dry. A good Imperial Stout, but too much of a cereal/postum and bandaidish element turned me off a bit. Maybe I drank it a little too young. I’d like to rate an older bottle.
