Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

07 Bottle: Pours a dark brown/black with no head. Dark chocolate malt nose, some mild fruit notes and a bit of the oak are apparent. Med-light body, very porter-like. Mild chocolate, light brown sugar and licorice flavors along with the oak as it warmed. I’m still a bit confused by this brew. It just doesn’t seem like a stout at all, it’s much too thin in color and body. With that said it still was very good and one I would pick up again now that I know what to expect.

750 ml bottle, 2007 vintage. Pours black in color with full foamy brown head. Aroma of chocolate. Taste sweat chocolate and coffee with alcohol warming with bitter finish.

2007 Vintage: Pours nearly black, with a large, light tan head. Flavors of coffee and a vinous quality, but dominated by chocolate. Medium mouthfeel. Flavors don’t last quite as long as I’d like, but still good. A very nice, well done Imperial.

For an unknown reason I spent a lot on this bottle but was expecting only a little. I am glad to say I was very suprised and really enjoyed this beer, except for the price. Poured a solid looking medium bodied thick black with a small creamy light tan head. While still cold the oak aging was not detectable but still a pleasant ododr of coffee, chocolate and espresso none the less. Upon warming this elixir takes on an overall woody sweetness that reveals notes of vanilla, cherries and a slight touch of soy sauce. Palate on this is medium to full with a creamy mouthfeel and a good amount of carbonation that dances it’s way down your throat with a slight touch of alcohol warming. Flavor of bitter chocolate and alcohol gives way to coffee and espresso finished with more chocolate and alcohol. If it wasn’t for the high price I would grab several more bottles of this.

Sampled @ GDBTF. 2007 sample. Pours a massive jet black with beige head; major smoke on the nose, treacle, maybe some rye, dry dark fruits, raisins, plum, chocolate; very rich and full on the palate all of the above form a melange of impressions, all good. Just tasty, very tasty.

After its disinterment from 750ml cork & caged bottle it takes up residence in the glass soot black, the head chocolate brown, creamy in texture, the size behemothic in size, after a few minutes of resting, the lace forms a thick glutinous sheet to cover the glass. Nose is chockfull of chocolate, coffee, sweet malt, and even a burnt molasses aroma, with a hint of oak, sweet & sour, “whew” what a treat for both the ocular and olfactory senses. Start is thick with burnt grain and a touch of sourness from the oak, smoky and the top thick and rich, it also takes permanent residence on the palate. Finish is rich in hops, the alcohol blatantly obvious, sweet and permanently dry, not a beer most will love, but one that suits me fine, lots of malt, hops and alcohol to add heat to the innards.

Sweet aroma of chocolate, figs and spices. Appears black with a thick tan head. Flavor is of charcoal, roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and vanilla notes from the oak. Palate is very thick. This is a very good imperial stout.

Pours dark brown. Thin body for style. Aroma of oak and first sip of oak and chocolate. Very drinkable for the alcohol content.
