Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Pours dark brown. Thin body for style. Aroma of oak and first sip of oak and chocolate. Very drinkable for the alcohol content.

750 ml bottle. 2007 vintage. Pours a deep dark brown. Very little carbonation leads to a smallish tan head. Aroma of smoked wood. Alcohol in the nose is quite prevalent. Initial mouthfeel of sweet chocolate. The beer goes down smooth, but a bit thin. Warming alcohol takes this beer across the finish line. Nice beer, but could have used a couple more months in the cellar.

Bottle. Very flat pour-almost no CO2 action. Opaque body with just a hint of red edges. Nose-grape, raisin, chocolate, liquid malt extract. Taste-light, maple, low-medium alcohol, light chocolate, wood, just a hint of chocolate powder, grape, flat mouthfeel, low to medium sweetness, low bitterness, rather thin for an Imperial Stout but not damningly so, chalky, very well done amount of char. An excellent use of wood aging. Fig, dark fruits, very enjoyable, not all sticky and over the top. I could drink more than one of these.

Corked bottle. Light brown head. Great rich mocha aroma with a hint of toffee. Taste is rich and deep with definite mocha and chocolate with a hint of tannins and a hint of oak. Finishes nicely and warm with a slight dryness. A fine example considering 10.5% ABV. Would buy again.

Pours a strange, thin dark black atypical impy. The head is thin and fizzy, light tan. The aroma is sweet, major soy sauce, alcohol, sweet chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, vinous. The flavor is very smooth, cool alcohol, sweet, chocolate, dry red wine, definite wine tannins, sweet grapes. Feel very carbonated in the mouth, smooth. Finishes warm. A very unique example of the style. Not bad.

The color was pretty dark but not dark enough for an imperial stout. On that note, it was fairly thin-bodied. The head was thin, creamy, and medium biege. The aroma was sweet, molasses, some vanilla, roasty, and coffee. The flavor was roast, coffee malt, alcohol, vanilla, wood, aged, and some hops. The palate has some carbonation to it. The finish was roasty, and hops.

Pours a dark brown with a small, light brown head. Aroma was sweet and sugary, with chocolate, caramel and roasted malt; some oak/wood aroma emerged with time. Body was too thin for the style. Flavor was generally sweet; with chocolate, caramel and roasted mlat dominating the flavor. Slight oak/wood flavor, became pronounced as it warmed a bit. Good and complex flavor, but the watery palate was a big turnoff. Still ejoyed this a lot.

black on the pour with a nice caramel colored head that didn’t last long at all. smelled like a candy store but perfect in taste. the sweetness was balanced out by the dark chocolate and coffee. excellent russian imperial stout.
