Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Wonderful. The biggest problem with oak aged beers is overdoing it and this beer is in perfect balcance. Taking such a great Imp. stout to begin with and blending it to perfection with the barrel aged Imp. stout leads to near perfection.

BOTTLE. Pours like oil. Not much of a head. Smoke and chocolate aroma. It is maybe the best imperial stouts I have tried thus far. It is a very complex brew and demands your full attention. Flavor profile masks the alcohol.

(2007 Bottle) Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a dense, pillowy head. Smell: Boozey aroma of chocolate and roasted grains. Strong notes of oak. Taste: Flavor of dark roasted barley, with some chocolate, maybe even some anise. It’s got quite a sour, vinous quality to it. A fair amount of warming alcohol is evident on the oaken, roasty finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Very warming. Drinkability: The heck is this? It’s a decent stout, sure, but it’s no where near as lush and inviting as that 10th Anniversary version.

Very dark brown in colour, brown coloured head that dissipates fairly quickly, no lacing. The aroma is mildly alcoholic, some chocolate malts, coffee, bourbon, vanilla and is quite rich. The flavour is not quite as filling as the aroma had me believe, lots of chocolate and vanilla, light liquorice, some very light bourbony alcohol. Lightly alcoholic mouthfeel, medium body, mild carbonation. Finishes sweet more than anything, sugary, light alcohol and long. Not to bad, I prefer oak aged beers to bourbon for sure.

750ml bottle obtained in a trade with <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?U target=blank>Crosling, thanks Nick.
Opened on July 27, 2007.
No best before date although I’ve had it for at least 2-3 years.
