Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Clear dark brown body with a small creamy light brown head. Aroma of chocolate malt and some light nuttiness. Sweet oaked flavor, hints of vanilla, molassas and sweet dark chocolate.

Pouring a deep brown body with red highlights and a modest tan head, this is a bit thin but enjoyable. The aroma is fruity with raisins and cherries, rich in malt, and rife with alcohol. The flavor is slightly more complex, adding molasses, a mild woodiness, and a Brazil nut bitterness. The finish is sticky sweet with that lingering bitterness and a low level alcohol burn. Happy anniversary, Left Hand!

Medium bodied for an Imp. Stout. Dark mahogany with a small tan head. Aroma of fruit, maybe cherries, some liquor, and molasses. Flavor is more of the same with an earthy malt body from the Oak. Smooth and sweet finish, it was a crowd pleaser but I prefer something slightly stronger.

Outstanding aroma, chocolate, cherry, some mollasses. Perfect dark black cherry body. Amazing taste, very complex, oak ageing is evident but not overpowering. Sweet and clean ending.

750ml bottle, corked & caged: This is so obviously on a totally different level from any other beer Left Hand/Tabernash/Indian Peaks have ever done before. The beer pours, a bit thinly, very dark brown with a somewhat retained dark tan colored head. The aroma really get interesting with notes of vanilla, nuts, chocolate and a resrained element of smokiness. Oak really comes through in the flavor, along with coffee, roasted nuts, and chocolate. My only complaint with this beer is that is just a bit thin on the palate, other than that it is exquisite.

750ml Bottle. Pours deep black brown with a vigorous khaki head that results in a thin though persistant layer skimming the top of this lovely brew. Pronounced licorice on the nose, soy sauce, burgundian pinot noir, and earth. The flavour is a cross between barley wine and chocolate stout. So incredibly complex. Coffee, oak, vanilla, black strap molasses and (again) youthful pinot noir. Beautifully aged. I wouldn’t age this. It’s simply too good to wait.

Very dark brown, light passes through, much like their regular Impy Stout. Decent head lasts pretty well. Must put aside pre-conceived notions as to what an imperial stout should be, and view this more as a variation on porter. There, much better. Aroma of milk chocolate with a bit of vanilla. Excellent use of oak, with vanilla wrapping around the chocolate of the stout, making it far more complex and interesting. A faintly tannic note on the finish. Not bad, much better than their original imperial stout, but still nothing to get overly excited about, unless you are really into the judicious use of oak.

Bottle. Via trade w/crosling. Pours a rather light color of mahogany with a tan head. Peppery aroma with some vanilla notes. Chocolate milk like flavors with some musty notes. Licorice flavored finish.
