Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Bottle, 65cl - Hazy black brown beer, with a moderate beige head. Aroma is malty with hints of chocolate, licorice, coconut and coffee. Flavor is malty with hints of coffee, prunes and chocolate. Balanced and great.

Draft. Brandy barrels eh? Pours near black with a beige head. Milk chocolatey sweet aroma with some lighter boozy licorice notes. The flavor brings roasted malts, chocolate, toasted marshmellows, toffee, and just a tiny bit of that brandy barrel peeking through. Quite enjoyable.

22oz bomber poured into a snifter. Pours fairly light for an impy stout, a dark mahogany that looks almost black in the glass, but not quite. There is a short-lived off-white head that recedes to a small collar and leaves no lacing. The aroma is very, very sweet - lots of vanilla, dark chocolate and more fruit than I’m accustomed to in this style. I also think I’m picking up some brandy in the nose, but I’m having to look for it. The taste doesn’t deviate much from the nose with the sweetness dominating from start to finish. There’s vanilla, licorice, sweet fruits and chocolate with a modest roasted malt backbone that doesn’t get in the way of the sugary sweetness much. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and fairly slick. The booze starts to catch up with you on the palate and after a few sips, I can definitely taste the alcohol. This is a decent stout, but not one of my favorites from Left Hand (mmm...SmokeJumper). It’s a sweet barrel stout that’s fairly drinkable but doesn’t offer the depth and complexity I was hoping for.

Bought at Swedish "Systembolaget" for $20 a bottle. Pours deep black with a small offwhite head. Smells of yeast, bitter chocolate and dark wet earth. Complex taste of sweet/bitter chocolate, wood, dark malt, toffee and with a small hint of cherry. Even though it’s 10,4%, there is no taste of alcohol. Small, close to non-existent yeast bubbles enhances the flavour. I like this alot, and will buy it again!

hmmm... the over wooden barrel notes have died down on this since last i tried it. good to know the brewers have tweaked the recipe. still pours deep black with a nice cloudy head. smells of chocolate covered strawberries. with a roasted nut scent. a nice little sipper to have while i wait for my dinner to cook, catfish with a garlic sauce and fresh jalapenos with rice. all baked to perfection. light coffee with strong roast usually makes me angry, we’re talking hulk angry, but this does not. it is the grape and sweet berry flavors that blend in well. the high abv is far from prevalent. a bit sticky, and the bitternerss is hiding, but this is better than i recall. nice fudge flavors working here. less barrel is better. i may have to revisit widdershins and see if that has botten better too. 5 7 8 3 16

Bottle 2009. Black colour with a beige haed. Aroma: alcohol, wood, lightly roasted, green/herbal hops. Flavor: salty licorice, roastiness, wood, green/herbal hops, alcohol, coffee, a bit sourish, strange notes of something that reminds me of green peas. Also too much alcohol.

Bottle, thanks to my friend Fredrik. Pours a blackbrown color with a small beige head. Aroma is of liquorice, toffee, coffee, vanilla, oak an dried fruits. Flavour is dominated buy lots of roasted malt and coffee, but there’s also toffee, oak, liquorice, and vanilla. You can also feel the presence of brandy (even though it’s not something I drink, it got this nice finer spirit-like taste). Warming. Body is medium, texture is smooth, and the carbonation is soft. A very nice oak aged imperial stout, but on the other hand not fantastic.

Bottled. Thx ekstedt Black with a small, beige head. Burnt, vinous with sweet, dried fruits. Creamy and malty with subtle oak. A bit too sweet.
