Tastes very good, more chocolate, different than all other RIS in my opinion just like the regular version (but way better, like comparing tootsie rolls and gourmet chocolate), excellent flavor. Drinkability is crazy despite the 10.4%, which was pretty much undetectable to the tongue. I really expected this beer to fall far short of expectations due to the price but it is very good and I got it on sale for $9 so...yes it was worth it and I am going to try and get some more. This beer was impressive and by far the best Left Hand beer I have ever had.

This is about a year old at this point and the wood has really started to show up. There is an astringent mouthfeel and a decent amount of carbonation. I think I liked this beer a lot more about 8 months ago.

The wood seems to have faded back in this beer. There is a hard-candy flavor and for a moment I tasted malted milk balls. Still, the alcohol has not been tamed much. Honestly I think this beer was better fresh and should not have been aged. Oh, well.

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Aug 30, 2009 On tap at the brewery in Longmont on 7/16/09. Pours very dark brown, okay head. Chocolate aroma on the nose with a touch of dark roasted earthiness. Similar sweetness of chocolate as the regular imperial stout, with now an added element of bitterness. This finishes with a dry oak flavor. This is the first oak aged beer I have tried in which I prefer the straight up version better. ekstedt (2448), Göteborg, Sweden

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 27, 2009 Updated: Aug 29, 2009(Bottle) Pours dark brown with a creamy nougat coloured head. The aroma is quite mild at first with malty tones of chocolate and caramel/cookie-like crystal. Undertones of milk, soy, raisins, dried apricots, dried plums and liquorice/anise. Maybe some oat. Soft oak notes of toffee, mouldy wood and vanilla. A strange touch of strawberry-flavoured penicillin is present. Too much warming alcohol, a whisper of brandy and liqueur is hiding a hint of tart cherries. The nose is rather acidic but otherwise quite enjoyable if you don’t focus on the mouldy and metallic notes. Smoke and herbal hops? The flavour is near medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Salt liquorice, black pepper and green grape skins up front. There are also some clear roasted notes of dark chocolate and coffee alongside fiery alcohol. Hops are woody, earthy, herbal, light spicy and tiny citric. Oak is light tannin-ish and woody. The mouthfeel is numbing, bit round, bit tart, sticky and medium carbonated with an acidic finish. I know I´m wordy, unfocussed or even worthless - but it’s not my fault, this beer is a liquid proof of confusion. Sonicdescent (382), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA

Appears a dark red color under light, black without. Minimal head, lacing brings this a step above average.
Nose is unusually light, but what is detectable is good. Wood, smoke, chocolate are all present in varying degrees.
Taste is oddly a little on the weak side other than a big hitnof wood at the end. The aftertaste and resulting warmth is nice, but there doesn’t seem to be much after this, a light nutty bitterness and hints of chocolate are present.
Mouth is medium bodies and light on carbonation.
Overall I hate to come down on any oaked beer, but I need a stout to have depth, or if not, have the flavor be more than wood.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 21, 2009 Pours a dark brown/black with a small head. Aroma is of chocolate, malt and wood. Taste is of malt, barley and chocolate, the oak is there, but not overpowering. Finish is mostly malt and barley with a small taste of bitter chocolate. Very good, the whole package goes together well.
