Commercial Description:
2008 and prior years: This 10th Anniversary celebration Imperial Stout hibernated in our cellars in French oak wine barrels since deep in the winter 2002-03. An ambitious blend of rich, dark malts and a wild variety of aromatic and bittering hops yield a beer that is large in character. Available in cork-finished, bottle-conditioned 750ml bottles.

2009 release: Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo’ Series. Russian Imperial Stouts gained popularity as a British export style from the late 1700’s through WWI. It catered to the Russians’lavish and opulent tastes and was well suited to the rigors of shipping across the Baltic Sea. Hibernating in brandy barrels for nine months before being blended to woody perfection, it is then bottle conditioned for an authentic old world experience. Imperial Stout is the perfect warmer for chilly winter nights. Enjoy the complex flavors that develop during the cask aging, including raisin, cherry, licorice, and toffee. It finishes with earthy, herbal hop notes. If discontent is the fuel of revolution then this brew is sure to keep any Bolsheviks sitting quietly by the fire. 75% Malt Beverage & 25% Malt Beverage Aged in Oak Brandy Barrels

Sporting “Brandy Barrel Aging,” how could this not be a great tasting beer? Pours dark muddy brown with a brownish head. Aroma is earthy, molasses, and some interesting wooden notes. Palate is quite thick, contributing a “heft” that was quite nice and luxurious. Flavor starts with brown sugar sweetness, caramel, and some chocolate. The barrel aging does not differentiate this beer that much from the original until the finish. The results here are mixed: a nice smooth vanilla-like flavor is added, as is a strange astringent/tart, woody, licorice touch. Sort of fun, but not definitively more impressive than the original.

Weak nose of whiskey and hint of coffee and toffee. Pours jet black. Aggressive pour results in minimal light tan head. Flavor has intense oak, like sucking a wood chip. Strong roasted malts, dark fruits, chocolate. Thick and creamy. Slightly bitter. Good carbonation. Given a bit more body and mouth feel would jump this up another .2.

Deep brown body with a nice tan head. Espresso, caramel, and a hint of hops in the nose. The body is thick and creamy with perfect carbonation. Nice chocolate and roasted malt flavor with a hint of toffee and caramel. Really tasty.

On tap at Brouwer’s "Back in Black" stout night 09. Pours black, with a small, light tan head. Lots of oak in the nose, but it isn’t quite so sweet as the ales aged in bourbon barrels. I think I prefer the natural oak notes to the crazy-rich-sweet bourbon notes. This one has quite a bit of alcohol burn, though, and doesn’t mask that 10.4% well enough. It’s still a little sweet, but the flavor really needs to be refined. Coffee and molasses, followed by alcohol, and a somewhat astringent note - licorice? Still very good... but it doesn’t fit the bill for an oaked impy stout.

Daytona 500 tasting. 2006 vintage, 750ml bottle. Dark, hazy brown with a brown head. Rich coffee and toffee nose, some light whiskey and vanilla. Smoooooth body, nice lace. Chocolate and coffee dominate the flavor, tempered by vanilla and a mild whiskey note. Some dark fruityness peeks through, too. Excellent!

[2009 Bottle enjoyed 5.3.09] Pours a dark unclear brown with a small frothy tan head. Odd aroma, not sure I can place it, fruity licorice, burnt rubber, gasoline? The strangeness of the aroma follows into the flavor, just an odd clash of flavors. Maybe these beers aren’t transporting right from CO because this is the 4th Left Hand Big Mo beer I’ve had that seemed cooked even when recently bottled. Flavor is phenolic, rubbing alcohol, some stale chocolate, old hops, nice light fruity sweet brandy notes, just not a nice marriage of flavors. The finish is not bad and a bit more flavorful. Medium/full bodied with a creamy mouthful and soft carbonation. I don’t get it.

wow this is nice. no smoke in the aroma or flavor. no heavy chocolate or spice. just true barley and malt flavor with a hint of spice, a velvety mouth feel and a sneaky rummy bite. best imperial stout i ever had and what i always wanted and expected in one. a must try because you deserve it. dont you?

Brown pour with a sweet aroma of berries and cocoa. Little oak detected in the scent. The oak is is noticed, but it is kind of subtle. Thinner body than expected. Pretty smooth palate. My complaint here is that the flavors don’ really explode. Not bad though. This is optimally experienced at a warmer temperature.
