Commercial Description:
Thanks for purchasing another offering in our Big Mo' Series. Our Rye Bock is a pleasant departure from traditional bocks and rye beers. The use of malted rye in beer finds its origins in Bavaria. We here at Left Hand use a bottom fermenting lager yeast, paired with a hop profile of classic German bocks. Our Rye Bock gets a wonderful tangy spiciness from the rye, accompanied by dried cherry aromas in the nose. It is a beer of great flavor with a long, savory finish. The image of a goat has traditionally been the symbol of bock beers. It was customary to feed goats rye to make them potent in the spring. We love the marriage of these two ideas. Will our Rye Bock exacerbate your spring fever? Maybe not, but trying out old folklores never tasted so good.

Honey and malt aroma, slightly tannic, slightly floral. Misty, tea-colored with a thin ringing head. Clear, sweet, lightly bitter, a graham cracker maltiness. Medium body, bitter and twangy on the front of the tongue. Medium -long bitter finish. Good and interesting.

750 I bought a ways back at the Vienna Virginia Whole Foods. That cork was a total bitch to get out. Pours orange with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is smoky and malty with notes of rye. Taste has some more smoke in it with some nice rye notes, tasty brew.

Bottle - 750mL corked and caged. 2007 bottle conditioned. Pretty dark copper pour with some magenta around the edges. Small, soft tan colored head. Spotty, delicate lacing on the glass. Aroma is rye, caramel, dark fruits, and sweet malts. Taste is also rye with big caramel, sweet, chewy malts, dark fruit flavors, some grass, and light spice. The body is medium but very bubbly and carbonated. Finishes with more chewy, sweet malts, lots of caramel, some chocolate, dark fruits and rye. Dark bready notes here as well. rather tasty, but I don’t know how well this would hold up as it aged.

Clear copper color, big tan head. Sweet, amlty, grainy scent with lactic and fruity notes. Lactic, phenolic, metallic, dry, sweet, malty taste. Moussy mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Dry (slight) rosated aftertaste with sugary sirup hints.

Bottled. Brown copper colour with off-white, cottony head. Pretty sweet aroma with somewhat complex aroma profile. There are almonds, canned fruits, hazelnuts and melon in the smell. Mouthfeel is pretty big but not all to sweet and sticky compared to some bocks. I notice a hoppiness, along with hazelnuts, bit of cinnamon and some unnamed spices, maybe clove and light pepper. The aftertaste is that of pepper and slight fennel or anise. It is pretty sweet, but not as sticky as mentioned before. This is an interesting interpretation of the style Dunkler Bock.

(Bottle) The pour is deep mahogany/reddish brown with a pale nougat head. The aroma is of spicy rye and herbal hops with a creamy caramel malt backbone. The malt also brings notes of roasted nuts, milk chocolate and toasted dark bread. Undertones of dark fruits, dark cherries, clove, mild ginger, earthy cinnamon and light molasses. Something reminds me of citrus, quite strange for the style. The flavour is malty and spicy with tones of caramel, milk chocolate, roasted nuts, dark bread, ginger, cinnamon and clove. Some herbal hops and cherries with just a whisper of smoke. The mouthfeel is soft and creamy yet light sticky and light numbing (from the alcohol) with a smooth carbonation. Malty aftertaste. Medium sweet and light to medium bitter. Medium to full bodied.
