Commercial Description:
Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

Poured from a bottle. Poured a deep copper-orange color with a white head. Muted malt aroma with some citrus hops. Flavor of caramel malts with some nutty flavors leads into a muted hop finish. Decent body, but somewhat thin. Overall it was ok, but I am not a big ESB guy to begin with.

Pours a hazy dark orange color with offwhite fizzy head. Aroma is a real nice sweeter citrus hop presence. Flavor is a slight bit sweet caramel but mostly more citric tartness that mellows with more earthy hop presence. Overall, enjoyable.

Bottle: Amber pour topped by an off-white, whispy head. Earthy cracker malt aroma, with light sweet hints and a subtle citrus component. Simple flavor. Has a light caramel sweetness upfront, which leads to some seedy qualities later, and a metallic hint as well. The finish has a very mild nutty note, and the slightest, restained fuggle character. A simple E.S.B., that needs more bitterness, in my humble opinion.

12oz 9/19/07 bottling. Hazy dark amber with a thin beige head. Not too much of an aroma, great body with awesome cereal malt and some candy throughout the flavor profile. Surprisingly long finish.

Bottle. Pour is a dark amber color with about one finger of foamy head. Aromas have a little bit of a grapefruit peel scent to them and a malty sweetness. The hops presence comes through nicely in the finish... a grapefruit/pine hops with a bit of a caramel malt in the background. That said, the beer comes off as watery and bland.

12oz bottle from Degarth. Amber colored body with a small off white head. Fades to a layer of foam on top of the beer, and leaves some lacing. Nose of citrus and floral hops, caramel malt, aspirin, grass and a bit of skunk, but not too bad. Initial taste is hops, citrus, doughy malts and toffee/caramel. Back of the tongue brings some floral notes into play, and more hoppy spice and malt sweetness. Medium bodied, heavily astringent. Slick, oily mouthfeel. Leaves lots of hop oil resin on the tongue. Finish is somewhat bitter, then fading into caramel and then a watery distant ending. Decent for what it is.

Hay, grapefruit, and caramel malt nose, rather well blended. Very cloudy ochre, medium tan head, inconsistent lacing. Nutty cashew with a generic bitter end. Velvety mouthfeel. This is a bitter with a little character. The taste is not dissimilar to an english brown.

Bottle. Clear amber color with a thin broken white head. Light biscuity malt and very light grassy hop touch. Taste is mostly toasted malts with a lightly hoppy dry finish. Pretty low-key and the hop characted was muted.
