Commercial Description:
Sawtooth Ale is an English style Extra Special Bitter. It is an extremely well balanced beer, with significant hop character, medium body, and a maltiness which increases in evidence as the beer warms to its "proper" drinking temperature. . The water used is quite hard, bringing it to near Burton on Trent levels, keeping it true to the style. This gives it the appropriate character and improves the malt extract significantly.

12 oz bottle pours a beautiful clear amber with active carbonation and a thin head of micro bubbles that lasts a while and leaves decent lacing. The nose contains a hint of honey and dough. The taste starts off with a hopped up twang and fades into a slight lemon and grass combo. There’s a slightly metallic aftertaste that is accompanied by a very dry and bitter palate that fits the style but not my preference. Slightly unbalanced but still a decent brew.

Very piney aroma, this one shines as it warms. Very nice session beer, with nothing standing out, but nothing to complain about....the epitome of balance. Where it falls apart is the bitterness could have been better on the end, to keep the finish cleaner.

Bottle. Nose is pleasantly sweet, with a hint of hops and citrus. Pours orange with a thin but steady white head. Well-balanced flavor, with a solid malt profile. Palate is a little bit on the sharp side, where a smoother feel would maybe be more appropriate for the mild flavor. Nonetheless, a nice American esb.

Draft. Aroma: Toasted malt and caramel, orange, floral, and earthy hop aromas. A light sulfur note as it warms. Appearance: Light reddish brown in color and slightly hazed. Light beige head was full and foamy with good retention. Nice lacing. Flavor: Slightly sweet maltiness with notes of toasted nuts, caramel, and rye. Hops are fairly assertive with citrus, pine, floral, and earthy notes. Medium high bitternes. Some sulfur/mineral as it warms. A bit of red grapes as it warms, too. Palate: Medium bodied. Moderate carbonation. Overall: A decent ESB, but was definitely tilted towards the hop end of the spectrum. Could use some more balance IMO.

Draught. Enjoyed it alot for the style. A fruity aroma, with some sweet malt and floral hops. Flavor was much of the same; ok mouthfeel. Often this style tastes like water with a mild bitter ending to me; this did not. A nice beer that I could drink a few of.

Draft. Fruity aroma. Pretty good palate, but a little too much carbonation. Good flavor, initially of fruit and then followed by bittering hops. Well done bitter.

Bottle: Aroma has strong ham, pine, cinnamon, smoke, and breakfast pastry notes, which I found very pleasing. Started out with muted biscuit malts, which were followed by a building sourdough aspect that combined quite nicely towards the finish with the hops. The finish is really nice, however. The hops start out mild, but then build to a very dry, clean, long bitter finish, with some mild fruitiness. As the beer warms, I tasted more sweet malts and some nuttiness, all balanced out quite well by the finish. Very nice.
