ditch (8), Dale City, Virginia, USA does not count Nov 1, 2009 Pours an impenetrable black with a decent one finger caramel head. Head hangs around for the duration leaving thin consistent lacing on the side of the glass goblet.
Aroma is very enticing. Smokey, yet sweet. Raisins and dates come threw the campy smoke. Overly roasted malts. Also had a dryness to it.
Taste is great! The over roasted malts shine threw, giving it a smokey and not burnt flavor. Raisin and dates again, coffee and chocolate. There is a slight bitter pine in the finish along with a warming sensation from the ABV. Alcohol doesn’t really come into play with the taste, but you can feel it in the finish.
Mouthfeel is good for a beer of this depth. Carbonation is complimenting. Only slightly oily from the malts.
Drinkability is also good for this style. This bomber will not have any problems being consumed in this sitting. A great smoked porter from a brewery I have never heard of before. Will be trying to find some more stuff from these guys! BuckeyeBoy (1635), Boise, Idaho, USA Oct 29, 2009 Bottle Pours out a smokey brown topped with a smokey cream head. Aroma of smoke, sweet malts, and smoked pork. Ahhh smoked pork. Sorry I am back now. Taste was not of smoked pork but of smoke, sweetness, molasses and rich malts. demdeac40 (238), Etowah, North Carolina, USA Oct 19, 2009 2008. Pours a dark, dark brown with a beautiful coffee and cream head. The nose is slightly sweet with a generous amount of smokehouse and bacon. Beer has a nice big mouthfeel with an earthy, salty, meaty mid palate. Finish has a good bitterness and mild sweetness that really works. Great beer for a cold winter day. Ughsmash (3978), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA Oct 17, 2009 750mL bottle, vintage 2006. Poured deeper brown with a thick, creamy, well-set cap of tan head. The aroma picked up sweet, soft, and salty bacon notes upfront with darker chocolates, molasses, and a little tar behind.. fresh oak and vanilla waft through.. tangy, woody character left the final impression. The flavor opened with sharp-ish smoke and oaky notes, backed quickly by burnt coffee, molasses, and a touch of tobacco.. salty smoke was laced throughout and amplified by alcohol warmth.. more of the deeply-roasted dark malts and smoke on the long finish with a grainy, earthy and woody bitterness. Heavier-bodied and quite well carbonated on the palate.. dry and grainy.. just a little sharp at times, otherwise it felt good. Excellent brew, and I don’t think the age hurt it a bit. beachbum25 (778), Powellville, Maryland, USA Oct 17, 2009 Sample f/22oz Bomber-Black pour w/a slight tan head. Aroma of smoked wood. Classic Smoked, flavors of smoked wood, peat, molasses, some dark chocolate & coffee. This is one of those big brews which would be perfect sitting around the fire on a cold winter night. Great after dinner sipper. Long earthy finish, very enjoyable. joeneugs (282), Livermore, California, USA Oct 10, 2009 08 bottle. Pours black with a nice creamy, lasting brown head. Intoxicating aroma of chocolate, smoke, molasses, alcohol, and heavy cream. Very potent. Creamy mouthfeel with subtle flavors of smoke and charcoal. Hints of licorice, chocolate and smoked malts. Just a touch of sweetness, with a very bitter, campfire finish. Overall, my favorite smoked beer. Very interesting and satisfying. JHunter (242), British Columbia, Canada Oct 2, 2009 shared a bomber pours a dark black with a stong smokey smell thin head. hints of smoked meat chocolate and so much going on but very yummy elihapa (1028), Honolulu, California, USA Sep 30, 2009 9/28/09 notes: poured at GABF. Nose is smoky, roasted malt, with dry chocolate. Flavor is smoked wood, dried meats, and dark chocolate. Actually fairly successful in pulling off this style. Body is medium, which in this case is ideal, since a full body with these flavors would make the whole thing too weighty.
