Commercial Description:
If you've been reading our newsletters, brewer Ro Guenzel gave you a flavor last month of what it took to brew this smoked Imperial Porter (singed hair, smoke in the eyes, sunburn, etc.) - all a labor of love. Available in beautiful 750mL bottles. The National Smokejumpers Association has made Smokejumper the "Official Beer" of their organization. So, here's the smoke in your glass, not in the woods.

Editor's note: this beer is described as 9.2% on the brewery website, but there are two sets of bottles on the market, labeled as both 9.2% and 10.5%. Left Hand has since had this beer lab-tested; the correct amount is actually 9.8%.

Bottle at Eulogy, Philadelphia, in the company of Loz, Casey and Traci on my fortieth birthday, 16-11-08. Pours black, brown head. A stunning beer, quite unusual with an almost cheesy feel to it at times, maybe that smoked processed stuff? Quite roasty, little furry feeling in the mouth, there is a slight Schlerlenka feel to this at times, and that’s a big compliment. Smokiness continues throughout and this is a very nice beer. Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Dark reddish brown color with tan head. Sweet, smoky, earthy and leathery aroma. Bittersweet flavor with firm roastiness, strong earthy-leathery smokiness as well as notes of coffee and licorice. Tarry, earthy and smoky finish. Very robust smoke beer.

750ml - Aroma is very smokey. Salty meat, burnt malts and some chocolate. Pours black with a huge brown fluffy head and great lacing. Flavor is campfire, burnt malts, coffee, crispy bacon, chocolate and a touch of hops. Palate is creamy and dry. Not for the faint of heart, this beer has teeth. I like it.

Corked and caged 750ml courtesy of RustyChiles. Pours a pitch black with a half finger tan head and spotty lacing. Nose is very smoky. It has a smoked meat smell to it which is cool. Some burnt malt and coffee going on too. Taste is smoked bacon, baby back ribs with sauce, burnt dark chocolate and campfire coffee. Medium creamy mouth feel. I like it – not as much as the Alaskan Smoked Porter, but it’s still a good smoked. Thanks Rusty!

(Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm, 15 Sep 2008) Black colour with ruby light when seen through light. Frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose witn distinct notes of smoke. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, dark fruit, dark rye bread, nuts and a dry smokey finish. Smoke dominates the aroma more than the flavour, that is more complex. Medium to full body, smooth mouthfeel. Mainly dry. Alcohol hardly evident at all. Lovely beer!

OK, this is a really, really hard one for me to rate. This beer is awesome, f’n delicious in every way. Nice and creamy, great soft texture and creamy mouthfeel. Looks great, pours a nice, even dark brown. Smells like smoked meat and candy. So, why is it so hard to rate? Well, I thought the smoke was almost lacking. For me, this one is a little too balanced. I expected big time smokiness. I expected big time meat flavor. I expected Goosinator on Crack, but this is a totally different beer. Smokejumper relies more on the malt backbone and shows off its deep flavor instead of letting the smoke become the flavor. Weaker on smoke, but a homerun on balance and flavor complexity.

750 ml bottle shared at BCTC 2008. Poured a deep dark brown with a medium sized frothy light beige head. Aroma of smoke, roasted malts, chocolate and some anise. Palate on this one was simply awesome, thick, chewy with an oily base and average carbonation, NICE!!! Flavor has lots of smoke on the aftertaste but starts off with some notes of toast and chocolate. This was one great beer and I’m kicking myself for not picking some up when I saw it around.
