Commercial Description:
If you've been reading our newsletters, brewer Ro Guenzel gave you a flavor last month of what it took to brew this smoked Imperial Porter (singed hair, smoke in the eyes, sunburn, etc.) - all a labor of love. Available in beautiful 750mL bottles. The National Smokejumpers Association has made Smokejumper the "Official Beer" of their organization. So, here's the smoke in your glass, not in the woods.

Editor's note: this beer is described as 9.2% on the brewery website, but there are two sets of bottles on the market, labeled as both 9.2% and 10.5%. Left Hand has since had this beer lab-tested; the correct amount is actually 9.8%.

9/28/09 notes: poured at GABF. Nose is smoky, roasted malt, with dry chocolate. Flavor is smoked wood, dried meats, and dark chocolate. Actually fairly successful in pulling off this style. Body is medium, which in this case is ideal, since a full body with these flavors would make the whole thing too weighty.

After finding out that this beer won a gold medal at this year’s (09) GABF, I just had to try it. And it is worthy, IMO. SmokeJumper pours dark, with a lofty, light tan head. The beer has a bold smokiness, but it’s not overpowering. Malts oozed with dark chocolate, peat, treacle and bread crust. Roasty-toasty aromas, along with an element of campfire, followed.

Deep black pour with a thick, sticky dark brown head. The nose is lovely. Rich, sweet dark malts. Deep cocoa, coffee, and toffee along with a nice bitter chocolate character late. Also has a lovely soft smokiness over this dark maltiness. The palate is rich and silky but with a bit of ashiness that dries it out a bit on the back. It’s sweet but there is a dried leathery character that gives it a nice complexity. Count me a fan of this.

Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of dark bread and toasted, light resin and leather for the hops and yeast, with background notes of smoke, charcoal and cola. Head is small, frothy, light brown, with no lacing and is almost fully diminishing. Color is black. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bitter. Palate is medium to full, watery with a lively carbonation. This is definitely the boldest and yet most easy drinking Smoked I’ve had.

Aroma of toffe, coffe and smoke. Appearance is dark as the night with a big nice head. The flavor is bitter and smokey with hints of coffe and vanilla. A very nice beer with a sudle smokey taste.
