Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

This beer pours a deep dark amber colour. Medium khaki head that leaves scattered lacing. Very enticing aroma of mixed spices, cloves, cinammon and honey. Mouthfeel is smooth, well balanced and full. Taste is very pleasent and a dance of sweet and spicey.

Bottle. Dark amber pour with a beige head. Sweet and spicy aroma and flavor. The spice really stands out in the flavor, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and a mild orange presence... really tastes like Christmas. Outstanding, even in June.

From a 22 once bottle purchased at By The Bottle in Vancouver, WA--Deep amber body with a small whitish head. Gritty, nutty, brown sugar nose with lots of hops and sweet stickiness. Nose of sweet Christmas spiciness including cinnamon, nutmeg, honey, brown sugar. pine and clove-esque orange peel yumminess. OMG. Way better than I was expecting by these naysayers. LOL!

Pour is hazed ruddy amber with a thin big bubbled light tan head...smell is super spicy with nutmeg, cinnamon, anise, pepper, and caramelized sugar....taste is sweet and spiced up front, just like pumpkin pie....sweet pumpkin flavor and cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and brown sugar...interesting....this really seems like a pumpkin beer to me...amazing....

Lots of spice detected in this one, although its not overly good. Has kind of a flat aftertaste. Alcohol really isn’t there. Guess its pretty good for the style, but I’ve had better.

Bomber. Filtered dark copper. Light brown skinny head. Very sweet, spice, and malty. Thick chewy mouth while alcohol is minimal. In general underwhelming.

Dark cinnamon aroma. Can’t help but think of various pumpkin ales that I’ve had over the years. Cinnamon just isn’t a beer smell, but it smells, well, holiday-ish. Dark clear brew, fair bomber and label, chainmail lacing head. Really pretty smooth - the spices aren’t raw or too bitter. Fairly sweet, but not overly so. Not very bitter. A bit grassy and herbal on the backend, with golden raisins in the mix someplace. Medium to slightly heavy body. This would make a really good pork marinade - just add some garlic and citrus. Liquor Loft, closeout rack.
