Commercial Description:
Fight cabin fever! Made with Rocky Mountain water, malted barley, hops, yeast, honey, orange zest, and other spices.

Editor’s Note: beginning in 2006, Snow Bound became the name for Left Hand’s strong winter seasonal beer made with honey and spices. It was previously known as XXXmas Ale. Below is the original XXXmas Ale description for reference.

XXXmas Ale is a spiced strong ale, using all natural ingredients to give it its festive nature. We brew this beer from a relatively high initial gravity to give it strength and body. This is (in our opinion) appropriate to a winter beer, and it helps to balance the numerous spices added. Honey is also added to increase fermentable sugars and give additional sweetness. Northern Brewer and Saaz hops are used sparingly, to allow the spices to evidence themselves. We add ground nutmeg, whole cloves, crushed cinnamon, orange zest and chopped ginger to spice the beer. Carbonation is kept low to accentuate the flavor of the beer and spices. It’s like a liquid cake. Brew water is relatively soft.

[Bottle] Pours light brown with a big light head. Beer is completely dominated by spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.), which is alright in the aroma, but the taste takes on a bitterness from it that is really quite unappealing. I really did not care much for this.

22 oz bomber purchased at Spirits RB. Pours a cler yet increadiblly deep dark reddish brown or perhaps brownish red with a large light beige head. Initial aroma of chocolate and cinnamon. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor pretty much in line with the aroma, chocolate and cinnamon. Although this beer isn’t overspiced I’m finding out that I’m not a big fan of the chocolate, cinnamon, nutmeg combo that alot of the winter seasonals seem to be doing. At 8.6% at least I should be able to catch a buzz and mellow out while I try to string the damn Chrsitmas lights inside the tree.

THOUGHTS: Very pleasing aroma. Nicely warming as it went down. Probably good on a cold, snowy night. Guess I’ll have to get another bottle. You cna actually hear the head carcklins as it goes down a litle right after the pour. To me he spice overpowered the noey a little. It also reminded me of some spiced cookie christmas ornaments my borther made when he was in kindergarten. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark reddish amber with incredible carbonation and a small to average, off white head that mostly lasted and left good lacing. The aroma was honey, ginger, nutmeg, clove and cinnamon. The initial flavor was lighlty sweet, while the finish was moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic and bitter and sour with a short to average finish. It tasted a little like apple cider. There was honey and the spices I mentioned in the aroma along with maybe some raisons. The deium to full body was syrupy and a little dry with fizzy carbonation and a light to moderate alcoholic finish.

Bottle-Memphis. Delicious caramel and chocolate flavor with a grainy nose. Strong nutmeg kicks up at the tail end.

Bottle, A very zesty and spice aroma, orange peel and cinnamon are prevalent. Reminds me of christmas, nice aroma. Pours a dark brown/red color with a nice lasting brown head. Nice sweet taste pretty good with a great amount of spices. Very christmas like I like it. But could not finish the bottle just too much spice.

A pretty decent winter brew. Very spicy - cinnamon and nutmeg. Murky-brown aroma, slightly tan head. Decent, mildly sweet aroma. Lots of figs in here. Pleasantly balanced with hops and malts. It really "tastes like christmas".

Dark amber beer, with pretty much no head on it - strong, spicy and floral aroma, smelling not unlike a christmas candle, with notes of clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg - the beer has a clean honey sweetness to it, and the spices are quite apparent, especially the ginger - nutmeg and cinnamon lend a drying character, but the beer remains fairly sweet - cloves become quite apparent late, becoming almost overpowering, along with some notes of allspice - some brown sugar and molasses also manifest in the finish - it truly does taste a lot like a christmas pastry - not bad, just a little cloying.

I thought this beer was decent, but not outstanding. While it has a significant amount of alcohol, I thought the alcohol’s presence in the flavor was a bit overstated. Nontheless, I thought it to be pretty good. This beer poured a brilliant copper color with plentiful amounts of fairly sticky head. It had a very pumpkin-beer-like aroma with lots of nutmeg smell, although it also had a chlorophenol odor of metallic tapwater. Flavor was very much like a number of pumpkin beers I’ve had, but with some bourbon notes and a very pronounced alcohol presence which may have resulted from not a lot of malt character to conceal the alcohol esters. Mouthfeel was dry in nature, but not remarkable. Not bad; I’d recommend it. The pronounced alcohol flavor made me feel like it was winter outside. Having it be 20 degrees and snowing outside when I was drinking it helped too.
